1. A Young effective LEO- Chris Clemons (age) and Andre Branch (inconsistencies) are solid depth/rotational players, this defense needs a young LEO that can bust and bend around the edge, Randy Gregory and Vic Beasley would be great in this role, the team needs to get more athletic up front.
2. Athleticism/speed/talent at the linebacker position- If you watch the Seattle linebackers one thing becomes apparent quickly, Bobby Wagner, KJ Wright, and Malcom Smith are extremely fast, they tackle and cover very well. Dekoda Watson and Telvin Smith are outstanding athletes, but both players have limitations that might force them into a backup role. Poz is a good two down linebacker but lacks the speed and change of direction ability it takes to cover tight ends and RB's out of the backfield. The Jaguars have solid linebackers but lacks the talent it takes to make this cover 3 concept work. This is an area I expect the Jaguars FO to overhaul during the 2015 offseason.
3. Athleticism and range at FS- You don't need a future hall of famer like Earl Thomas to make this cover 3 concept work, but you do need a FS that has above average range and athleticism, the Jaguars currently don't have a player on the roster that fits this bill. Whether it is someone like Devin McCourty (I don't expect DM to make it to FA) or someone in the draft, the Jaguars desperately need a quick twitch athlete at the FS position, Winston Guy weaknesses are showcased in this defense.
All in all, the cover 3 concept that Pete Carroll employs is great if you have the personnel to run it, the Jaguars are lacking talent at several key spots to run this defense effectively and unfortunately because we don’t rush the passer well, we’d struggle with man concepts too. I expected the defense to carry this team but it’s obvious that won’t be the case, the offense (with BB5 at the helm) seems to be further ahead of the defense, the silver lining is the Jaguars seem to have infinite cap space and are destined for a top 3 pick to help turn around a porous unit, this will be a major point of emphasis in the 2015 offseason.
The problem with Chris Clemons age is that he needs to be rotated out and I feel that Andre Branch has done a spectacular job filling in by getting 3 sacks in 3 games (tied for 3rd in the NFL), but your attention goes to the LEO because of the poor performance at OLB, and a few critical mistakes at key moments by Safety.
I disagree wtih the statements about Poz, he's one of the best players on our Defense but he's trying to do too much (making up for the poor performance and missed cues of OLB). They need to work on tackling, the basics. You have to wrap it up.
They need to work on the zone coverage for OLBs because the young guys arent getting it.
Its a young team and you have to expect mistakes, but being blown out for three weeks in a row (regardless of how inept Chad Henne and our Offense was) isnt really an excuse for their performance. They should do more OLB blitzs since they arent that great at covering...

Poz is definitely one of the best players on this defense, but would he be one of the best players on many other defenses? Probably not, when you're giving up yards and points at the rate this defense is it's more than just tackling and working on the basics, this defense is devoid of talent at every level, the only player I'd considered a cornerstone is Jonathan Cyrpien, you can argue that every other position needs an upgrade.
I dont know when you get into the what ifs, it could be that Poz would be even better if he had more experinced talent around him ......
He played great in Buffalo and here in Jacksonville and neither is a great Defensive team during his tenure....
A good what if scenario is him playing in Seattle.. does he upgrade the position, lower it, or keep it the same?

Poz has been around enough to know how to tackle. He just isn't good. He doesn't have enough speed to cover what he needs to cover and he's almost always late to tackles. That's why you see him make tackles after a 5 yard gain or more, he just doesn't have the ability to close. I'd expect him to be gone after this year if they try to address the position in the draft.

We all like Poz, but I think you're overrating him just a bit. There's no question he'd be a better player with better players around him, that applies to anyone, but he has some deficiencies that aren't coachable, he's awful in coverage, that goes back to his Penn State days. Now to answer your question about Seattle, there's no doubt Poz would be a downgrade to a player like Bobby Wagner.
Need to make trades for Michael Bennett, Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Bruce Irvin.

Don't leave out all of their linebackers.

I'm greedy, give me KJ Wright and Malcom Smith as well.

Poz is highly regarded around the league, but I have never liked him. My preference is to have an MLB with speed but he one of the slowest in the NFL. He is a guy who survives off of his intelligence and not physical ability. I'd like an mlb with both.

Ok. No excuses per Caldwell this should be the #1 defense. Get it done Gus.
Rush, cover and tackle.
Right now, we're doing none of them.

He's a solid player, and has been solid for the Jaguars, but to think POZ isn't one of the many issues we have on defense is naive. I agree with the above.
our defense is great right now. Its so good we are only 398 points away from braking the 2008 lions record of points allowed in a season. They allowed 517 all year. we are at 119 right now. We have the best defense ever.
