Thank god I survived the Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne era's in Duval.  Now it's time for Bortles to show us what made him the #3 overall pick.

A few takeaways from yesterday about Bortles: He's going to make rookie mistakes.  He made two of them yesterday which turned in to two turnovers.  In all honesty though I wasn't mad about them at all.  He was throwing the ball down the field, keeping his eyes foward looking for receivers, and moving in the pocket.  The naked bootleg that he turned into a 20 yard gain the other way would have been an easy sack with Henne in the game.  Garbage time stats may have come into it a little there, but it didn't look to me like the Colts defense was playing off very much.  They were still very much trying to repeat the first half.

Myself, and a few others here, have said that better QB play improves the Oline play.  That turned out true yesterday.  Sure he took a sack, but he never rushed.  He moved in the pocked, moved the pocket itself, and avoided pressure.

IMO he made up for his mistakes by throwing 2 TD's.  Hurns made a great play on the DB's to get loose, so kudo's to him for making a good play but he never would have been able to make a play if the ball never got past the line of scrimmage.

And once they started to back off the line, look what happened!!!  The running game started to show signs of life.  Imagine that!!

Now where do we focus our attention: Defense.

DE, LB, and FS are HUGE needs for this team.  Telvin still looks lost when he's in and he was probably responsible for a TD.  Poz just sucks at anything that has to do with running.  I know many here love him, but lets be real.  He never makes a tackle until after it's a 5 yard gain.  He can't run to cover anybody.  He's a liability in the scheme that we have here which is basically a modified 3-4.  The problem is when you run a 3-4 base, the LB's have to be athletic enough to cover the middle of the field.  Poz just isn't that guy.  He's a tackle-box guy who doesn't even do that very well anymore because he's too far off the LOS.  We need LB's who have the speed to cover and the instincts to react.  Telvin may be one of those guys but it may take a year or longer for him to not look so lost.

Ryan Davis is IMO the best passrusher we have on the team.  Branch is improving some, but his main strength is in run support.  He overruns or gets flat out bodied and stopped when he rushes.   Clemons is past his prime and average at best.  Marks is still the best guy we have on the line, but we're starting to see how teams react to him.  They're doubling Marks and using that double team to set up their running gap's.  Big Red is probably the only other good guy we have on the line but they need support which they aren't getting.

Cyp finally came back, but you can tell that he wasn't the reason we got gashed last week since it happened again.  He didn't help much either.  Cyp is best when he's close to the line of scrimmage.  The problem with that is he was supposed to be the Chancellor type guy who could play center field.  It's starting to look like he doesn't have the speed to do it, which is having an effect on how the rest of the defense in front of him has to play.

I really think the offense will find a stride with Bortles playing.  Having a guy who can make the defense back off will open so many things up.  Once we have Ace and Lee both back we'll finally start to see how this offense is supposed to look like as a whole and I'm excited for it.  I was happy to see Denard in the game more, but I'm still hoping to see him on a screen/dump off/draw which I haven't seen yet.  He needs space and he's going to start to see some.  Offense may be able to carry our team a little now so we'll see how it all unfolds.

I'll see more when I look at the All-22, that way I can look more closely at the Oline and DB's.  Have a good day errbody Smile

I want to see how the defense plays with Bortles starting. They started great against Philly and then got gassed. And just started bad the past two weeks. However, even the defense seemed hyped when Bortles got in the game and made some good stops even with Luck still playing. Still let up some big plays but looked better in the second half than the previous 8 quarters.

I think there's a bit of added fire now that they believe we can win. Seems like they started that way week one, got tired, and then just played to play knowing Henne wasn't going to be able to help us score points anyway.

With some semblance of respect on offense and a leader who already seems to lift up the whole team, I think we see a better defense this week. Worst case we can already see that the OL is better with him in.

That should be made into a sign or T-shirt

Somebody did.  I think it was the Bold City Brigade.  It's grey with a teal picture of Blaine running after one of his fumbles and it says "I survived Blaine Gabbert."

I would say "I survived Gabbert and Henne but I got Bortles."

Jacksonville's offensive line is the worst position group in the NFL. - NFL.com

---------------------------

It is obivious that Blake Bortles is an NFL starting QB and Chad Henne is more like a 3rd string QB in the NFL at this point in his career, only on certain teams desperate for a QB.

The RBs are playing poorly other than D-Rob, and the Oline is horrible at both pass protection and run blocking even the highly regarded Luke Joekel or SuperBowl LG Zane Beadles hasnt done as good of a job as one would have hoped in Jacksonville... Our Olines help even the worst pass rushing teams like the Colts look good with 4 sacks and thats just the Offense...

Our Defense has made every opponet we've played against look like superstars scoring over 35 points per game, and they can literally throw on every down without much fear of being sacked or intercepted.

The line didn't do too badly after Bortles got in the game.  One sack and 2 hurries the whole second half I believe.  Countless people have said it, better play from the QB position will make better play from the Oline.

Yes we know the defense is trash.  I was speaking specifically to players, not just generally.
It is not just what Blake does on the field, but also his comments in the postgame presser, that you have to like. He said his second interception taught him not to make that throw again, describing why it was a bad throw. What that tells me is we can expect to see fewer "stupid" throws and he is less likely to repeat big mistakes later in the game.

The eternal question:  is going through years of Gabbert and Henne level QBs worth getting a Bortles?

You would ask an OLDER Colts fan if it was worth going through the Mike Pagels and Jeff George's to get Peyton Manning.

I thought Jim Harbaugh was the last Colts quarterback before Peyton Manning.

I'd say yes. Very rarely does a team luck into 2 franchise QBs back to back. Indy got lucky with Luck, GB got lucky with Rodgers.

Look at NE, NO, SD. They have a great qb now. When those guys retire, who's behind them? Those teams will drop off for awhile unless they strike gold on a backup to groom in the meantime. Which NE may have.

Pats got extremely lucky with Brady too.  They had Bledsoe in his prime ahead of him and Brady only played because Bledsoe got hurt.

Well, New England expended a 2nd round pick this year on Garoppolo.

You have to sometimes put "immediate impact" on the back burner when you have a 30 something QB-even a good one-when there is a guy you think can develop into a good starter at the position.

Green Bay lucked into Rodgers in that they were lucky he was there, but they did the right thing in drafting him, even though they had Favre.

Green Bay's plan was to redshirt Rodgers until Favre retired. The ugly way Favre left the team was a result of Rodgers being good enough to become a starter.

Wallbash  :teehee:  :ermm:
I know it sucks to lose the way we did, but I'm pretty excited about this team.  Bortles being a start is more important then anything else.  If we can build a team around him then watch out!  I really do think we will see this team turnaround.  Maybe it's the hangover talking, but to me the arrow is pointing up.

Don't get your hopes up too high. One man does not take a team to the playoffs. We are going to see more rookie mistakes because there is a lot to learn just by playing. We will improve a lot, but the offensive line needs to gel with itself and Bortles before we actually have a "good" offense.

He did with the Colts...

Half a game is not enough to suddenly become great during his first NFL start. I am very confident that Bortles will play a little bettre next week, but do not see him being above average yet.
