Not surprising people here cant differentiate bad dline play from bad linebacker play. I give them a B- pass rush has been ok at times and the big run plays come from guys making bad fits in the back 7. its the linebackers who deserve an F

Telvin Smith is lost in zone coverage. Poz is known for run stuffing and Reynolds and our other backers has been average.
Our secondary needs a make over besides Cyp

Our LB core is the weakest link IMO

Id rather have a premier corner over a premier line backer

I'd rather have a Luke Kuechly over a Sherman or Patrick Peterson personally.

They are easily the best part of our defense, our back 7 is not playing well.

It'd be fairer to grade each position individually but I haven't got time for that so, overall, a D+

D-Line gets a D+. Half of our sacks came in one half. Linebackers get a nice fat F. Not tackling or covering. Do your jobs gents! Secondary gets a F. Like Gus said, guys are either out of position or guys aren't making plays when they have the chance.

Week after week, everyone blames mental errors for the bad defense.

How to overcome that? Keep playing the same guys and hope you can coach the mental errors out of them? Or substitute a less talented player and hope he won't make the same mental errors? Or fire the coaching staff?
Because it just keeps on and on and on.

This is the same coach who wanted to red shirt Bortles.
So.....um...yeah
Dude is not living up to expectations.

Right now, despite the 3 losses the best game for all 3 losses was the Philly game, last two games we haven't shown jack on Defense!

They earned an F for failure. No presence. They let the Clots go 2-1/2 qtrs. w/o punting. That's pretty terrible.

Quote:We spent some money bringing in Clemons, Hood, and Bryant.
Branch has flashed but it seems like last years line. Nothing spectacular.
My grade would be a D-
I disagree with you completley, this is nothing like last years line. The play from Chris Clemons hasnt been as bad as many have indicated on this message board. After three weeks of the regular season with rotations being made, Chris has 1 sack, 1ff, 8 comb sacks (5 solo), 1 stuff. That's not horrible, i mean yes it could be better but he isnt in for every down like a lot of our teams RE. In regards to Andre Branch, he is tied with the league in 3rd place overall with 3 sacks (already half of what he had last season and isnt even in on every down), 2 FF, and 7 tackles. In regards to Big Red Bryant he hasnt been as impressive as I had hoped, but he has at times gotten pressure and taken on double coverage many times freeing up another DLineman to get pressure and his replacement Tyson Alualu has played poorly as well at LE and at DT because I guess they are trying to find a place where he will excel. He showed flashes during preseason but hasnt turned into anything during regular season, considering his hype when he was drafted and not being double covered he has been a big disappointment. In regards to the tackles led by 99 Sen'Derrick Marks his 2 sacks and 10 tackles doesnt do him justice compared to how great he's been playing on the field. He's getting pressure up the middle and performing way better than any other tackle on the team. I would even go as far as to say that Marks play so far would have him as one of the top 5 DTs in the league right now. Roy Miller on the other hand, has been another big disappointment, maybe ziggy hood would play better but hasnt really shown it when he comes in other than recovering one fumble. Arby Jones i dont think even played a down? not sure...
To recap not the best DLine in Jacksonville's history but not the worst, they are probaby average in the league its the poor OLB & DBs that are the huge concern and problem of letting up 39 points per game in my opinion...

Quote:Our LB core is the weakest link IMOYes I agree, but the play by the corners has been weak too....
They do a good job of tackling after they made the reception but they arent stopping them from making the reception.... or intercepting the ball, etc...
the team is the worst against the pass with 918 passing yards allowed.... (yikes) HOWEVER they are tied for first in sacks with 10
That being said, I dont think its the Dlines fault, they LEO isnt really messing up his coverage whether branch or Clemons and the LE Big Red Bryant is doing an okay job with the run... a few big runs were up the middle DTs fault (tyson was playing DT at the time) or pitch to the outside on Big Reds side but he was being double covered and held on the one play...

Quote:Wait till next week to grade them. They have too many excuses to use atm. Hopefully they'll rebound and fight harder since the offense will be better. What he said..........however, the season for most of us STARTS this Sunday! Now we'll see what this defense can do if they have at least a glimmer of reason to hope in our offense. The first three games were throw away games paid in respect to Chad Henne by the front office (IMHO). Of course in doing so, the f/o showed a distinct lack of respect for the fans... rather taking this fan base for granted. They shouldn't... but I digress; this should probably be a topic for another post....
But if the season ended now. They're an F.

Our line is actually not bad.
Still a ways to go but I didn't think bringing in a couple older Seahawks players was going to be the fix-all.
I give it a C.
We're tied for a league leading sacks with 10, according to espn.com
Our dline has faced the 4th most pass attempts in the league.
I mean... they aren't terrible. If our LBers could do their job, our Dline wouldn't look as bad.
We still need that every down end that can constantly beat their guy.
