Quote:I say the defense.
They didn't stop a thing. They couldn't stop a runny nose with a kleenex factory today.
Sorry, but the strength of this team was supposed to be the defense. It's the same old sorry can't tackle, can't sack, can't stop a pass stuff we've seen for too long.
It all sucked, but the defense sucked for both halves today, so there's that.
This is true, and maybe in some ways even more frustrating than Henne at quarterback (though I'm sure there is no shortage of those who would dispute this...). With Gus Bradley as the head coach, a former defensive coordinator for a super bowl team, and the f/a acquisitions we have on defense, the ineptitude we're seeing is inexplicable.
During our regular season games so far, we have been run on through the teeth of what was 'supposed' to be the strength of this defense, the line. Other teams have been able to pass at will as we are generating very little consistent pressure on the quarterback. Oh, we pressure every once in a while, but it's so little as to have negligible effect on the quarterback. And our secondary... they look lost and confused most of the time.
This is the same sort of (bad word removed) we've been watching for some years now. No one expected this team to be playoff caliber this season, but there was a realistic expectation that we wouldn't be getting 'blown out' and would keep the scores at least close. Obviously, the quality of our defense was 'misrepresented'. We may have a former super bowl defensive coordinator for a head coach, and former seahawk defenders, but what we've got from them was apparently not enough to compensate for the overall glaring deficiencies on this team. Football really is a 'team' sport, it requires that the majority of the team 'do it's job'. We still have far too many holes on this team to even be competitive.
In my opinion, we took a right step in starting Bortles. Again, we need to realize that he (Bortles) is a rookie, and is going to make rookie mistakes this season. Since it was already a forgone conclusion even before the first game that this season would be a stinker, I don't agree with the hesitation of the coach to start Bortles from game one. The only thing accomplished by starting Henne was to set franchise records for getting sacked, most points allowed in a half, and the largest point differential allowed in the NFL this season.
Some would say that the point differential and points allowed were exclusively the fault of our defense. It's true our defense take the lion's share of responsibility for it; but it's not totally their fault either. The ineptitude of our offense kept the defense on the field so much that they were tired by the end of the first quarter! Consistent '3-n-outs' by the offense will kill any defense in the NFL! Our offense set records for failure to convert third downs. With Henne at quarterback, knowing Bortles was being kept on the sideline, with no running game due to 'slow-mo' Gerhart and the 'we can't run block' line, our defensive players had no reason to believe that they would ever do anything but '3-n-outs'. So why try?
I think our defense gave up, and I don't blame them. These guys want to win, but it take a defense AND an offense to do it. We've had no offense at all. I know Gus has been getting the heat for a lot of this, but I think that a lot of our issues has to do with the lack of production from our offense. The offensive issues goes to a lack of quality players.
For example: Toby Gerhart. He has proven to be an ineffective running back. We blame our line, but even when he does get through a hole, he's generally only good for a few yards. He's just too slow for the position he holds! What is more frustrating is that we already had someone on the roster who comes much closer to filling the role that Gerhart currently has; namely, Denard Washington. Yet, he still is getting dramatically underutilized. Picking up Gerhart was a bad pick by Dave Calwell. Gerhart should be used as a fullback; that's what his running style lends itself too. Robinson should be the main 'work horse' to fill the position left by Mojo.
Until these changes are made, we will continue to fail on offense. We need to have, at least, a threat of a running game. With Gerhart, we don't, and other teams know it. At present, our main running threat is our rookie franchise quarterback, the last person you want to be going down field taking hits! Until we start utilizing Robinson to his full capacity, and see Gerhart as a 'special situation' running back, we will continue to be less effective than we could be on offense. The net result of that will be that the defense spends too much time on the field and gets 'gassed'; and we end up getting blown out.... again, and again.
I believe Bortles will elevate the game for eveyone on this team now that he's our starting quarterback. But we need the coaches and F/O to get their collective heads out of their (bad word removed) and put the players where they are best suited instead of trying to stick 'square pegs into round holes'. This is to say, adjust the offensive and defensive schemes. Adjust!!! It's not a sin to be flexible. Sticking with a game plan that you don't have the personnel to operate is not only a losing game plan, it's just outright stupid... play to our strengths!
