Bleh... Kid is dumb as a brick and shouldn't have yelled obscenities in a crowd, especially considering he is the "Big Man on Campus." Still, even combined with his current behavioral record you have to question the university on this one. I know it has been a tough couple weeks in sports media when it comes to the controversial topics, but this is probably the least serious thing someone has done and been suspended for in the past weeks.

 

Bill Simmons wrote on Grantland today that it seems like NBA and NFL teams "leak" information about punishments and gauge media and public reactions to see if that's what they should stick with. If this is a similar instance, it wouldn't surprise me. Why change your mind less than 24 hours away from kickoff? Afraid of media pressure? If that was something FSU administration was worried about, they should have given him a harsher penalty the first time and skipped the shenanigans.

They're bowing to public pressure.   But in this case, the public was right.   I would give a mild pat on the back to the FSU administration for admitting it.

Academia - institutions that champion free thought and expression so long as you don't do or say anything they disagree with or offends anyone's fragile sensibilities. Deity forbid anyone hear words that hurt their feelings.

 

So, when are they banning the sexually offensive rock and rap music from campus then? Blocking university access to web sites that provide access to misogynistic entertainments? Monitoring dorms for [BAD WORD REMOVED] and other forms of offensive paraphernalia (like political adverts of disfavored parties or religious groups)?

 

The whole thing is either a witch hunt to get Winston on something (since none of the serious stuff stuck) to assuage the FSU admin or it's a craven attempt to avoid any bad publicity caused by the other stuff going on in the sports world. Either way it's shallow and everyone cheering it should feel manipulated.

Yeah at this point I think changing it to a whole game is just the effect of the fans and media.


It should have been done right in the first place and this is an attempt at damage control.

Your first part I agree with. I understand that's it's Winston and he's a straight idiot and most likely that's why most think this situation deserved a suspension. I find the whole thing lame tho. I hate this new social media/media driven world we live in.

They just talked about it on College Gameday.  Everytime I hear him talk, he just sounds dumber and dumber.  Bless his heart.  The guy is just a moron.

The kid is an idiot and putting himself in bad situations.

The university probably realized that his punishment was setting him up to be an epic hero if they are losing when he comes in and then wins. That is not really "punishment".


If they lose, it will all be in his lap now and he will have no one to blame but himself. That is punishment.

So I was just scrolling through ESPN.com just now and came across a video of Tebow talking about Winston.. Even though the "prayer" word was used multiple times, it wasn't what I thought it was going to be.. I thought it was going to be some kind of religious, zealot bull hockey, condemning Winston to an eternity of fire, brimstone and sugar-free Koolaid.. Was actually pretty sound advice from Jesus Jr..

So here we go, this guy is still playing after sexual assault (allegedly, don't flame me), stealing from publix, and now standing up and screaming, well you know. If I was in charge he'd be gone just bc he put himself into those situations alone. I'm sure he'll be a model citizen when he enters the NFL...

I don't agree with how FSU has handled this. Don't suspend him and then conduct more of the investigation and then suspend him for the whole game. Finish finding out all the facts before making a decision. I agreed with the first half suspension, because he's been a moron and needs to realize what he could lose, but this just looks like damage control now.

I hope the redshirt freshman lights it up tonight, maybe they won't need him anymore. Highly unlikely, but I just can't stand Winston.
