Quote:4 boxes of bullets? You terrorist.

Would you care to elaborate since google shows nothing to explain what this is?

Use in that order.
Quote:Is it just a perceived liberal bias you have a problem with? Is it ok to have conservative bias?

I would argue that the examples of liberal bias are not just "perceived" they are actual fact.  I would rather a simple concept be taught rather than one that is biased either to the left or the right.  How about teaching the truth?

I am with you there. If the life/social courses were taught like science and math courses rather than being washed and or exagerated based on location we would have a stronger country and a better educational system. I spoke earlier about the clear conservative bias placed in history courses in Jax high school.

Can't get your way with rational discussion must start a war. Got ya.

Care to elaborate on the "clear conservative bias"?
Quote:Care to elaborate on the "clear conservative bias"?
Glossing over of slavery in regards to the civil war while sympathizing with the south. No talk about the Japanese internment. Barely touching on civil rights or woman's suffrage movements. I suppose conservative bias is perhaps a broad term and would not not be proper for some. More of the idea that America is the best, does nothing wrong and anything we did wrong along with the glorification of battles and war. Little context or insight into other nations or our interactions with them.

I say conservative because the general basis of conservatives views of america is that we are the best and we should always lead because we are always right so my history books painted our country in this light drilling patriotism into us in a manner I disagree with these days.

The thing is, it's a liberal tenant that America is not great.  I would venture to say that now, not so much, but once we were.  Let's take a look at some of the achievements that have come out of this country.  These are just off the top of my head.

First off is the founding of this country.  Many people sacrificed and died in order for this country to be created (one of the reasons that we observed our recent holiday), defeating a far superior British military.

Next, we came up with a system of law.  This has been followed for many years, and because of it, we developed into something great.

The Civil War came about that not only corrected what was wrong here (civil rights abuses, "slavery"), but it also united the states.

During WWII we came up with nuclear technology that helped end the war (we won by the way).  We also defeated two major enemies in the process, and many lives were lost.  Also during that time many other things were developed and/or improved on.  Think cars, television, electricity and appliances.

During the Korean War we expelled a violent and brutal dictator out of South Korea and have since then ensured the safety of South Korea.  Look at where North Korea is now.

By the end of that era, we developed jet engines and rocket engines and put a man on the moon.

It was shortly after this period of time when electronics and computer technology took off.  The C programming language was invented and developed (which is still in use today) as well as the UNIX computer operating system (again still in use today and runs much of the internet).

In the next period of time, the Cold War was ended due to us as a nation under the leadership of Ronald Reagan.  Also during that period the first home computer was born and being developed (the Apple).  It was also during that period of time that the internet was being developed.

I could go on and I probably missed a few things such as the development of electricity, the phone, etc.  However, I hope that you get the idea that America, and specifically The United States of America is great.  It's because of accomplishments made by people here long before you and I.

So if you don't like the "drilling" of patriotism into your meager brain, how about thinking about what the people did when they defeated the British Army back during our country's founding?

My meager brain? Well garsh Mr maybe you should have used smaller words so I might understand why I am so dumb. That was quite pathetic.

Here I thought you might be different from the rest of the frothing angry "patriots" Turns out you are really no different. That's a shame.

If you want to have a discussion without questioning people's intelligence by all means we can have that but you have now attacked me personally twice in two different threads. Wake on the wrong side of the bed today or something?

Aside from that, American of yesteryear has done some amazing things. We put a man on the moon as one of the highest accomplishments. But you have to take the good with the bad and flat out ignoring while also glossing over the terrible and awful parts of the past is no different than what you are claiming to be a liberal bias. You can't just ignore awful things because it challenges your red, white, and blue fuzzy feelings.

Typical liberal progressive (is that what you want to be called now?), deflecting actual facts to get away from the "argument" (discussion).

Here is something that just came to me, and may be a liberal progressive way of thinking.  Do you always focus on the bad rather than focus on the good?

How about addressing the parts that I outlined and explain how the "patriotism was drilled" into your head regarding each one.  I'm sure that you can find a negative in each one.  Perhaps it's because a LGBT person wasn't involved on the moon landing or because the Revolution left someone out.

You questioned my intelligence, I called you on it and now are getting your panties in a bunch over it?   O____o

Not only did I address the overall point by stating we ought not gloss other the bad, I agreed with you America has done amazing things and added an example. The moon landing. The same one you are using here for what exactly? I'm not even sure what you problem is other than being obviously angry that I question the lack of balanced approach to American history.

I'm not even sure exactly what your problem is, other than you are angry, have a unhealthy dislike of liberals, and have taken to insults as the rest of your conservative brethren favor.

I don't think it's a liberal tenant at all that the country isn't great.  I think this is a great country.  But I also think we need to improve, and we certainly can't look past our past atrocities.

My wife did her master's thesis on how ignoring the worst parts of history in favor of the good ones leads to future problems.  We can't just ignore the fact that slavery was a major problem in this country.  We can't just ignore history.  And we absolutely shouldn't.  How blacks were treated during slavery, as well as the years after up until the Civil Rights Act, and even beyond that.  That's an important part of our history too.  So is FDR's Executive Order for Japanese Internment as well as his plan to pack the supreme court.  These aren't things we should ignore because America is great.

Imagine if Germany refused to teach about the Holocaust.  Many countries have used historical revisionism in order to make themselves look better, and thus fail to learn from their mistakes.  "Those who fail to learn from History are doomed to repeat it" - George Santayana.  We shouldn't sweep our treatment of Native Americans under the rug to say "Well yeah, but we also fought off the British, so they were great people who should be revered."  The fact is they were imperfect people.  That doesn't take away from the great things they did.  We shouldn't sweep slavery under the rug, or the treatment of blacks during the years after the Civil War.  We should look at their fight for their rights.  If we don't, we could very well eventually underestimate the importance of the rights that we have today.

Who ignores those things? Crimeny they are all we hear about from the Left, how bad we are because of our past and how we need to be making reparations for it.

LOL.  "Questioned your intelligence"?  I hate to say it to you, but if that's a "question of your 'intelligence'" then you have worse problems.

I guess in today's society we need to be politically correct, so I guess I should say "I didn't mean to offend you or question your intelligence".  Does that make you feel better?

Rather than screwing around with all of this PC bs, I'll attempt to get back to the point at hand.  I cited several things that makes this country "great", but you seem to think that teaching about the greatness of this country is "wrong" or "right leaning".  As liberals tend to do, you choose to highlight or cite negative things rather than acknowledge everything positive.

One thing to note here.  President Ronald Reagan was always positive when he spoke of Americans and the future.  He always believed in the american people and what they could accomplish.

What you see out of President Barrak Obama is always negative.  Why is that?  It seems that the liberal progressive idea is always to be negative.

Oh you, so adorable.

Which part of, I agreed with you that America has done amazing things, is being lost on you? Is it because I didn't use star spangled colors or say Truly Amazingly Amazing American Things?

All of those things you stated are amazing and good things. Was it necessary that I go down the list and agree with all the obviously good and amazing things? One cannot just say yes we did amazing things?

If you do not learn from history you are doomed to repeat it. I am saying that teaching American history but ignoring or glossing over all of the bad things is not American History. It's a watered down version. I do not understand why this seems to be so offensive to you.

Very good points indeed, and I somewhat agree.  However, what is healthier, focusing on a negative or a positive?  The main point is the "focus".  That is what should be highlighted with an acknowledgement on the negative.  This isn't done as highlighted earlier.  The far left (and the left in general) wants to highlight negative aspects of our history rather than put the focus on the highlights.  While both may be true, where should the focus lie?  Are we as a nation great and have accomplished many things?  Or are we as a nation bad because of our past?  It's all about perspective.

By the way, I would be interested to read your wife's thesis paper.

I agree that the focus should most definitely  be on the positives. I have been out of public school for way to many years now to know what the history classes are like now but when I took them they were sunshine and rainbows with very little acknowledgment of past negatives. That is how this whole conversation started, by my past experience. No one thinks we should focus on the negatives. I am sure a fine balance could be established that highlights the points because let's be honest even if you gave equal page time to the good and the bad there far more good American has accomplished than the bad and by a wide margin.

LOL.  Back atcha (I think).  You're so "adorable" as well.  I actually like having discussions with people like you.

That being said, here's one for you.  Why is it that liberals progressives obsess themselves with everything that is negative or bad?  Why does the "bad" have to be the highlight?

Probably for the exact same reason conservatives are negative about policies they disagree with. We see things as wrong or poor and want to fix or improve on them. Being negative in the political arena is not exclusive to one sect or another. Heck watch the constant outrage and fear on Fox if you want a fair and balanced (see what I did there) example of all political affiliations being negative in their own right.
