Prior to even offering the contract there was a report out that Cleveland was going to match ANY offer he received. And they did just that.

I guarantee you that there was a limit.
Had the Jags made a more serious offer, at least enough to make Cleveland pause and take a breath before matching, maybe the Jags would receive more credit on their "offer".
The Jags offer was barely market value. Everyone knew Cleveland would match THAT offer in short order.

The Jags made a serious offer. Cleveland said all along they'd match any offer. There's nothing to indicate they wouldn't do exactly what they said they'd do.

we should have looked at more options this offseason other than Mack. is what it is. nothing to do now except hope for the best.

You don't think they looked at their options? Mack was the absolutely best option, and the team went after him aggressively. It didn't pan out. If there was something out there that still represented an upgrade, I'm confident they would have pursued it.

They went after Mack, but I wouldn't label their offer as that aggressive.

TMD, I disagree that the Mack offer wasn't serious. It was a good offer, just didn't pan out.
In the draft, I'm sure they looked at getting a starting Center but ended up grabbing Allen Robinson because they thought he was too good to pass up at that spot.

I don't agree that they handed Brewster anything. He became the starter by default, promptly fell on his face, and ended up cut as a result. They gave him an opportunity to win the job, and he didn't answer the call. The mistake would have been to force the issue even after recognizing he wasn't the answer.

im sure they did, but didn't pull the trigger. you just cant start a season with what we have. its inexcusable.
they obviously thought more of Brewster than he actually is, which was a big mistake.

It was a noble effort but there really wasn't much they could have done to get Cleveland to blink. In the end it did not really cost them anything.
the silver lining (with this O-line) is that we should be in prime position to draft good interior help in the next draft.... but man, that is a long way off. a little depressing.
hopefully the turds we have now get better... a lot better.

Well the above isn't true no matter how much you say it.
I have maintained a billion times on this board that I have no problem overpaying for legit elite players.
The players that I have a problem with overpaying are the average players like Beadles, Pashos, Session, etc etc, that we pay like stars, but aren't.

It's not that hard to understand. Cleveland said they'd match any offer. Jacksonville made an offer that reflected fair market value and would have made Mack the highest-paid center ever. Cleveland, as they said they would, matched it. A Browns exec supposedly said, off the record, that the only way the Jaguars could have prevented the Browns from matching an offer was to fully guarantee it, which would have been idiotic. With the poison pill provision quietly written out of existence, there was no realistic way that the Jaguars were going to get Mack.
I blame Brewster for telling the team why are you looking for a Center, I'm right here.. and now hes not even on the team...
The Jags made a offer to Mack at the end of FA. They let several guys get by them in the first 3 days to a week. They did not handle this correctly.
They also are a new GM and Coach.
Of course Kelly is a 2nd year college coach. No problem for him
