I wish Gene Simmons would go away.

I've always preferred classic rock, and by that I mean stuff from the 70's. I was born in 72 with my formative years being the 80's. We had the big hair bands, which I liked too, but my dad always had the classic rock station on (the one Lex and Terry was on in the late 80's/90's) and that's what I really liked. Thankfully I have many songs immortalized on my mp3 player. I can't tell you the last time I listened to an actual radio station. Most so called music these days isn't even music. These people are entertainers, not musicians.
Quote:Newsflash for TMD:

Mainstream radio has always played the top hits. In the 70s, I could not stand AM radio, until FM album rock stations gained popularity. If you want diversity from the airwaves you generally need to live near a college campus or stream it on the internet.
Why is this hard to comprehend for some?
Quote:Where I live theres always been a number of radio stations which all played various amounts of the top 100 music. The issue is that 2-3 decades ago you simply had more diversity within the actual top 100 itself.

Frankly, we do not have that anymore.
Stations are specialized now a days. There's rock, rap, pop stations etc.
Quote:Listen to a Hold Steady or Gaslight Anthem album.  Danava, Red Fang, The Passenger from Orlando, Barrio Tiger from L.A., there are literally thousands of straight up rock and roll bands, you just have to listen.  Best Coast, Cloud Nothings, Fake Problems, Frank Turner, Surfer Blood...

Edit: Billboard charts are irrelevant today, that's clear channel and the labels milking their death for the last few dollars they can get.
Great post, well said.
Whenever someone says "X genre is dead" what I actually hear is, I don't understand how streaming audio services or social media work. There are TONS of good new bands spanning every genre is the musical spectrum. You just have to try a little and it is very easy to find.

^ This.  You can find lots of great music on Spotify alone and that is by no means comprehensive.
Quote:I'm not saying that its not there.

However, the Hot 100 is whats popular and being played and what much of the younger generation are listening to.

Rock cannot be found on the hot 100 anymore or very rarely. Its essentially irrelevant to the youth that is all Rap/ Hip Hop/ dance brainwashed.

This is so far from the truth. Rock may not be on the Top 100, but that doesn't mean other genres of music are irrelevant to the youth. Trust me, I AM the youth.
You just have to appreciate the evolution of music as a whole nowadays and go with what is new and out there now. One of my favorite things is Spotify's new music Tuesdays, they introduce a lot of new bands and songs and I had those artists to my play lists like this week so far i've discovered for king and country as well as Mike Doughty so far. Accept that rock won't be like rock in the 80s or in the 90s. The bands that inspired you did it while they were there. Appreciate music for what it is.

Yep.

I'm a lazy music listener. I'll just create a station on Pandora based on a song I'll hear and like, then let Pandora play their style matches. If I continue to like what I hear, it's added my shuffle list.

I used to listen to Pandora a lot but their lists seem to loop awful fast. Some of the playlists on Spotify are hundreds of songs long and great variety. Either way it's a good time to be alive if you're into music. So many great ways to discover new tracks and artists...
