Did you factor in how long they were on the field from piss poor offensive play? Factor in new scheme, new players, and rookies? Likely not. They were better than paper shows last year. And should be improved this year.

Someone is already in mid-season form.

Yep.
All I'm saying is that number is shockingly low.
I was taken back when I saw it, one of those things I never realized about last year.
Last year the defense gave up close to 450 points. I'd say a reasonable expectation for improvement for this year would be to knock that number down to about 360-ish? Fair?

The beer taps at the stadium produced 22.4% more foam last year. That really must improve this season.
Unfortunately it is unlikely to improve tomorrow.

Duh. It's a road game.

I see this team and this schedule to be around the 19 to 21 allowed ppg range. Yup thats top 5 to top 10 range.

So you expect them to roughly give up 320 points this season.
Thats top 5-10?? :ermm:

...and I think thats asking a lot for the defense to improve from 450 points surrendered in 2013 to 320 in 2014.

It's not really surprising, and anyone saying it was because of the offense doesn't understand football.
The defense just didn't have players in the front seven that could affect the opposing offense. I think the Jaguars allowed something like 130 yards per game rushing and only got 20 sacks.
Memories are short, but anyone that was paying attention last year remembers that the Jaguars were out of contention in most of those games after the first quarter. Teams were routinely scoring 20-30 on the Jaguars in the first half and starting their "kill the clock" offense up midway through the second quarter as opponents knew the Jaguars had no shot at coming back in the game thanks to having a QB like Henne.

Wow, seems like a lot of points to be ranked 7th. I guess defenses aint what they used to be, leaguewide.
In any event, again - thats asking the Jags to go from 32nd in the league in points allowed to apparently around 7th....in one year. I don't see it happening.
I think 360-370 is a more reasonable target.

Well, there are four new starters this year - three second year guys expected to improve and a healthy rotation along the line. Not to mention glimpses of decent pressure from a 4 man rush (finally.)
We allowed 28.1 points per game last season. A few big numbers inflated that a bit, but it's ugly nonetheless. Only 4 teams were worse.
I can see that number getting down to the 21-23 range this season - which is middle of the pack statistically.

It's a passing league now, remember? Goodell wants offense. Man, he must hate the Seattle model!

Considering we get the titans and texans twice each keeping some games under 19 points really ought not to be such a problem this season. We'll see.

wow, we weren't the most points allowed.
The Redskins, Bears, Vikings and Raiders all allowed more points than us last season.
...and our points allowed total was very high. 440+

Would be great to hold a division rival under 20 a few times. We held the Titans to 20 last year. Texans scored 20 and then only 6 on us. Raiders scored 19.
I can se us holding four or more games under 19 this year. (Whatever that random-for-the-sake-of-a bait-and-switch-TMD-thread number represents.)

how/ why is that a bait and switch number?
lol, I guess because its shows how bad the defense was last year, you have to attack the premise. Typical from this board.

I'm just saying that it's enough for Top 5-10.
Personally I think our aim should be 389. That's a 60 point difference from last year. Good enough for 21st last year.
