I'm surprised the start Bortles now crowd haven't made "Break a leg, Henne!" t-shirts yet.

Week 3 makes sense the more I think about it.

 

The Colts defense, especially pass rush, isn't that good.  Mathis will be out serving his 4 game suspension. They had 42 sacks last year and 19.5 of those came from Robert Mathis.

 

It's the first home game, he should make is debut at home.

Plus it leaves him plenty of time to pass for 50 TDs, win the AFC, and ride off into the sunset.

With average to slightly above average QB play this team could win the division next season.  At the minimum they'd be contenders.  The Colts are primed to fall back this year, you can feel it coming.

So are you thinking week 5? Week 6?  Shouldn't take much longer for him to accomplish that.  :teehee:

I think it's less Henne and more o-line, personally.

Since the season hasn't started for the Jags yet, I figured I'd put in one last offseason thread. I know as Jag fans, we are conditioned to be cautiously optimistic, but there's so much to like about Blake Bortles. Down to earth, competitive, and prototypical, and self made. He's shown stuff in 4 games to make me completely okay with the fact that we suffered through Gabbert. He could completely stink up the joint in his first game action, but how likely is that. He has whatever "it" is. If we don't don't see him for awhile, hype him up! Don't be afraid


I liked that Bruce Arians said that there was only one franchise quarterback in the draft and that he went to Jax


I like that Dave Caldwell had Bortles as his guy eight months before they drafted him


I like that Caldwell said he thought he had a chance to be the first pick in 2015


I like that our scouts, head coach, and GM all unanimously had him as their number 1 guy


I liked that Houston had a draft card with Blake Bortles' to select him #1... On Draft Day


I liked that he passed that silly little 26-27-60 threshold for successful QBs


I liked that people speculated that Cleveland traded out of the 4th spot because Jax picked their guy


I like that he showed up for the combine QB drills when every other QB opted to pass.


I liked that the pick pundits were calling a reach at 3 showed up and prove his worth in preseason action


I know you've all heard that good stuff before, but knowing what we know now about Bortles, it sure is incredibly reassuring and awesome to read when you put them all together

so if we are waiting for henne to suck, what are we thinking, second game?

Bortles is getting people hyped up because he looks like a guy that *could* be a truly elite quarterback.  Like Manning or Brady elite.  SI had an article last week that Andrew Luck was the heir apparent to those two guys and will be THE dominate QB for the next decade.  When I read that my first thought was that they wrote that article a year to early.  But it's early, so we'll see.  Lefty looked good for us initially too and he bombed.

I don't think this team is quite there yet.  With great QB play maybe.  But our defense still needs work.  And our offensive line needs work.  We're starting to get the pieces together though.  A good draft, with good free agent pick ups could put us there.

Leftwich had certain limitations that assured he'd never be an elite QB.  I don't see the same thing with Bortles.  He has all of the potential you'd want in a guy that you expect to become your franchise QB.

I still don't get the elite praise for Luck. Dude has looked awful in too many games for me to even begin to think of calling him elite now.

If you look at Luck's stats, he's been good, but nothing close to elite.  The media hyped him up big time coming into the league, and they will continue to prop him up because that's what they do.

I agree.  Leftwich had the tools but he lacked the work ethic and was a bit fragile.  Bortles so far looks like he has neither of those issues and is more athletic to boot.  The only reason I mention it is because some people thought Lefty would be a better QB than Brunell and of course that never happened.

I love how the "elite" tag gets thrown around so much.  A quarterback is only as good as his talent AND his supporting cast.  A big portion of that supporting cast starts with the 10 other players around him on offense and ends with the other 52 besides him on the roster.

Leftwich had a big arm and he could make all the throws.  You just had to set his windup speed using a calendar.  He was tough as nails, but brittle too.  Not a good combination.  He was willing to take a beating to let a play develop, but his body just couldn't handle it.  He had the potential to possibly be better than Brunell, but aside from a few great plays, that potential never really developed.
