Looking at these college stats, he really only had one what you would call "stellar year", and that was his Jr season.
He really regressed in his senior season.
Not once did he top 60% completion rate in any season. (Yet he became known as one of the more accurate passers in the NFL)
I wonder where a QB with the above stat compilation, including the senior regression, would be drafted today?? Probably out of the first round.

I think thats taking it too far. Its not as simple/ random as flipping a coin.

The biggest shocker to me was the completion pct. Not one year over 60%!
60% now is like the "minimum" when you're talking QB prospects.

That was a red flag to me too but 17 to 23!?! You put up that stat line these days and you don't get drafted. Probably don't get UDFA calls either, unless your measurables are off the charts. Crazy.
The thing is, his bad senior season was likely a contributing (if not the main) factor in rumors that circulated about possible drug use with him that combined to cause his stock to drop dramatically.
Fortunately for Marino and the Dolphins, it all worked out for the best.

He still made the 1st round. Even if you just look at his junior year, very underwhelming. It's a different game today.

Kinda reminds me of that Ole Miss QB a few years ago, Jevon Snead I think it was.

They'll be open, I'm not sure where you'd find one with Jags games but I have a few friends that have lived up there for the last 10 years or so. I'll hit them up and PM you if I get any good suggestions.

Are those stats the norm for elite college QBs back then?
Despite the bad stats, maybe he just passed the eye test and showed the "IT" factor? I don't know.

I believe, like the NFL, it's much more of a passing league. The prudent thing for me to do would be to google some stats and then respond, but, nah, it's Friday and i want to be lazy.
I'm pretty sure there were some factors that caused his drop in stats, whether that be lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball or the rumored drug use.
Then you have the opposite end of the spectrum where college QBs now and days are able to put up gaudy numbers in the stats column but happen to be a product of the system vs actual QB talent. That's where it pays to have a highly regarded scouting department.

Agreed completely, and taking Bortles 3rd overall where many observers didn't seem to have him rated that high seems to be a prime example of superior scouting/decision making paying off.

I don't know if I'd go that far as to label his junior year "underwhelming".
37 TD in a pro style offense back then was actually really good for a college QB. Heck, that would still be seen as very good today in a pro style college offense.
