Quote:With the state of our OL, we're gonna need it!

Having Toby Gerhart at RB could speed up the process of Blake Bortles being inserted into the starting lineup.   My guess is Gerhart's pass pro skills were a significant factor in the thought process of Dave Caldwell, Gus Bradley,  and co.  in signing Gerhart to a sizeable contract.   Even though the Jaguars QB of the future wasn't on the roster at that time,   the team brass probably envisioned the QB of the future being added in 2014 or 2015.
Quote:I got that. Seems to me we should be stronger in our own convictions/ opinions on players that we've had a whole camp/ preseason to evaluate and not be swayed by what other teams may feel about them at this point. Who's running our team us or them?

Stop The Madness...

Caldwell threw the NFL a bone and it was knawed on. He/they decided that the bone was too precious to be knawed... Hinse his/their retraction...

Caldwell knew who his franchise QB was going to be when he signed Gerhart...

I agree from that standpoint that's who Dave Caldwell wanted as his franchise QB.    The Texans or Rams could have forced Caldwell to change his plans.

Can he play Center. Make no sense to hang on to him if he's not playing. If he can block we need him on the active roster Asap! Worried about the o-line. That's the only group that will not be 100% when the season starts.

His quote makes me side on the fact he was surprised to learn that this guy was valued from other teams. IE: He didnt know what he had.

And to add an asterisk here, This isn't a big deal at all. GM's are going to miss horribly on draft picks time to time, Sign crap FA's, and get players stolen from them by the practice squad game (stashing, signing, etc.). I personally think Caldwell has a better track record than most GMs at this point in their career

Wow.....
Quote:Apparently other teams were interested in trading for him or signing him off waivers. The Jags planned to place him on the PS but with him drawing interest from other teams they decided to hang onto him.

I mentioned this in a couple other threads.  Basically, they knew they would lose him and they wouldn't be able to re-sign him to PS if they cut him.

So, they did what they had to do to keep him.
Quote:The plan was to put him on the PS, which sort of proves the bold.

But continue to try and find something to complain about.

So easy a caveman could understand.  They wanted to keep him.  To keep him, they couldn't place him on PS.

I'd be curious to know what kind of trade chatter they were generating.

A positive that I'm taking from the situation is that once Caldwell got a clearer picture of the situation, he changed his approach and responded to it.

Once he saw that Shatley was not going to make it through Waivers, he changed course in order to keep the player around. I like how he responds to a changing situation.
Don't know who this dude is and never heard nothing about him during training camp. It's a good chance he'll never be nothing of importance to the Jaguars.

hard to imagine another team as desperate as we are in the interior OL, but who knows

Didn't we cut a center that Seattle picked up?

And cut him a few days later. My guess is they needed a body for their last preseason game and Bradley put in a good word on Lewis to Carroll.

Someone evidently thought he was worth discussing a trade scenario with the Jags.
