Personal friend of mine just got cut by the New York Jets. He played DT for Michigan and converted to OG after being drafted by the Jets in the 6th round in 2013.

Hopefully he gets picked up on Waivers by somebody.

I'm just wondering; is there such a thing as a non personal friend?

Is that a thing?

Idk. Maybe online friends? Gaming friends? Work-related friendships?

Idk.
But that's still personal. My online friend are really close.

Anyway, I hope your friend finds a roster spot somewhere.

Sure...95% on facebook.
Will Campbell is a good example of a player that would greatly benefit if there was still a developmental league.   Especially since he changed positions last season with the Jets.

My guess is Campbell will get a Practice Squad opportunity with the Jets or eventually with another team.   Hopefully,  that added exposure will help prepare him to land a roster spot next summer,  if not sooner.

What sucks is that three other teams (Lions, Saints, Raiders) were looking at drafting him last year but they all wanted to draft him as a DT. Now, he's 1.5 seasons behind in his development as a DT. He's still pretty young, though.

I think the key is what you mentioned in the last sentence,  as Will Campbell does indeed have youth on his side.   Also,  in his workout with the Lions and some other teams,   he worked out at Defensive Tackle and on the Offensive Line.   Including at Center.  Versatility can be huge on a Game Day roster,  especially as injuries pile up in a game.

My gut feeling is Will Campbell likely will continue to be developed as an Offensive Lineman.  With the extra 2 Practice Squad spots per team this season,   it definitely would make sense for a number of teams to attempt to sign him to their P.S.
