Oh well.

How did he fall apart so quick?  Guy always seemed like he was a decent corner for the Jags.  You don't just luck into 13 picks over a career.  1 or 2, sure.

I always had the feeling that Cox wasn't totally sold out to football and that hindered his development. I think he had the skill level to play in the League, but if he wanted to make it a long term thing he was going to have to put in more work into being a football player than what he was intending to do.

Applaud Caldwell for not resigning him now. I was VERY upset when he walked.

I was probably the most vocal about letting Cox and Knighton go, bravo to Caldwell for seeing Cox drop off coming, I didn't see it that's for sure. I wonder how he knew Cox was going to drop off like that or was it just a matter of him not fitting their scheme? Either way major bullet dodged.

What does your post even mean? Sounds like babble. Do you work for ESPN?

 

Give me a reason why you think "Cox wasn't totally sold out to football" and why you think he didn't put in the work.

 

Perhaps he was just no longer good enough.

Cox hit his ceiling.

The question that I have is to what extent do you believe injuries led to the decline of Derek Cox as an NFL CB?   A few seasons ago,  he looked like one of the more promising young CB's in the league.   Now,  his career could easily be over.

I agree completely.  He overachieved in a few games his rookie season and played above average in a half dozen games in his sophomore campaign. 

 

Then he seemed to get cocky and quit putting in the effort required to perform at a high level.  I'm sure the 4 injuries didn't help, but by the time the Caldwell/Bradley bus came to town, it was obvious he wouldn't be a candidate for that "highly competitive" mold they had designed for the players they would sign or keep. 

 

He had the talent but lost the drive, IMO. It happens frequently.  I see it in my field all the time.  Complacency kills.

You don't recall him being benched under JDR due to lack of effort and brought back 4 weeks later?

I think you mention it later, but when Del Rio sat him for a few games that really made me wonder about how committed he was to the sport. I'm not coming down on the man because it's not like I "All engineering, all the time" myself but there's also a reason I'm not designing space shuttles.

As soon as Gus did a couple of interviews preaching competition and striving to improve every day I figured Cox was done. Soooo not a Gus type of player.  Perhaps the injuries have slowed him a bit as well.

LOL.  OK, tough guy.  Sorry I've somehow offended you.     Cox had issues that were documented in the local media at the time and attitude/commitment were speculated as the problem. It happened.  Maybe the speculation was all wrong. Could be.  It certainly made sense to me having watched his play before and after the benching.  That's not me thinking I'm a psychologist.  It's just me being a fan.  This board is chock full of that  kind of stuff, so relax a bit, pal. 

 

Call it babble. Call it speculation. I don't give a rat's [BLEEP].  It's my best guess as to why his career went downhill after looking promising.  If you don't get it, don't agree with it, or think I'm making stuff up, fine.  Enjoy your differing opinion. 

 

By the way, my job is highly competitive with someone younger and more talented waiting to take your job at all times. In that way, and in that way only, it is like the NFL.  That's what happened to Cox here.  Sorry the comparison offended your sensibilities. 

WOW what a fall from grace!

Don't forget, he was another FCS player (Richmond in his case) that the previous GM when he was a scout and GM liked to draft...    I also remember some of the attitude stuff..  Speaking of FCS players drafted by Gene Smith, Will Rackley was put on IR by the Ravens the other day for concussion issues... his 3rd trip to the IR in 4 seasons and 2nd for a whole season...  He's an alum of the same college as me(Lehigh) and was an All American at that level a couple of seasons..   I am disappointed that it looks like his career may be over unless he can recover but normally 5th year linemen who are not already starting don't usually last with all the younger cheaper talent available..  Can't really cry too much for him  since he'll be paid rather than receiving a settlement and can try again...

 

FCS level players can develop  certainly  like Meester proved but the current roster only has a few guys ( Bradfield, Shorts,Brown,McCray) that will be on the final list from non FBS level schools...
