It's because he's white.

First off let me say what if the Jaguars hadnt of signed him, are you fine with it just being Toddman, D-Rob, and Storm Johnson (which arent actually that bad of backups really)?

What happened in 2010 that stoped all the above praise?  He was drafted in the 2nd round by the Vikings and became the backup to Adrian Peterson whom nearly broke the most yards rushing ever award and is a 3 down back.

Despite that he had a few rushes while there....

He averages 4.7 yards per carry on 276 attempts and avg 7.8 on 77 receptions.

Last season, he led all backs with a ludicrous 3.8 yards per carry after contact (minimum 199 carries), and has a career average of 2.8 yards per carry after contact.

His 40 yard dash time is 4.53 its no CJ but he's not a snail either.

You could put the same stats for every Wisconsin RB that has failed in this league.  His Oline at Stanford was superior to the Pac12 competition.

Kind of funny that he got the Archie Griffen award.  Would you like me to post his stats in college & the pros ?   Success in college does not always translate to the pros.

Regarding his pro career, that's also somewhat distorted because he didn't take the day to day pounding that he's going to take here.  By week 8, players are getting banged up.  Meanwhile, his body is fresh.

We'll see how this plays out but I see him as very average at best.  Maybe a few decent years like Payton Hillis but I don't see him as a dude that accumulates 1,500 yards (rushing and receiving) each year for 6 years.

If our Oline can get it together, and if Toby can remain healthy... I think he's going to suprise you (pleasantly)...

Quote:Jerome Bettis wasn't a speedster.

Most people remember Bettis in his late years with the Steelers after 3,000 carries.   The dude was a freak in the 90's and early 2000s.

Oline, Good Health, and a good complimentary back that has the style of a Darren Sproles would be nice.
Having RT Pasztor out for at least a month due to breaking his hand wasnt reassuring even though Cam Bradfield has played RT tackle and held his own on a few occasions with the RG spot & Center still unsettled it is a huge point of concern.

The left side is the strength as long as they remain healthy.

Gerhart isn't a speed back... not really breaking news. This is why we have guys like DRob.

True, he's more of a power runner but these guys calling him slow are making me wonder what they're seeing.
He's not slow.

Our OL has been horrid in run blocking since 2013.

Agreed.  He was getting hit in the backfield on most of the touches he had, including on the stretch plays.
His draft profile on NFL.com is dead on,

"Gerhart does not possess the speed scouts like to see for the next level. Does not effectively attack the perimeter on outside runs or kick into another gear to hit home runs up the middle. Attempts to get downhill in a hurry, but burst through the hole are just adequate."

That is exactly what I have seen from him over the years. While he ran 4.5s at the combine, I think he plays at around a 4.6. The guy has 276 career carries with 7 fumbles. If he does that the next 2 years in Jax he'll lead all runningbacks in fumbles. Quick correction. One site has him with 5 career fumbles with another site 7. Either way, he is leading the NFL in fumbles.

I was unaware of his fumbling tendency.

4.5s at the combine and you clock him at 4.6 in pads in game situations.  This is bad how exactly?

240 pounds at 4.6 speed is a moving brick house.

Exactly.  He doesn't need to be 4.4.  He's plenty of fast enough to break off big runs.  We saw it last week.
Quote:First of all let me say that I'm a big fan of us signing Gerhart, and I love power and downhill runners in the NFL. I'm a strong supporter of good defense and heavily running the ball. That being said, speed obviously isn't Toby's strong suit, which is fine with me, like I said, I like downhill powerful runners. But if you look at his old film with Minnesota, all of his best runs were results of incredible down-field run blocking and huge holes to run through, not to mention he just looks... well.. slow. I have yet to see any proof that the guy can use any type of burst or moves to get the yards that we're undoubtedly going to need from him. I don't want to come off as hating on the guy either, like I said earlier, I am a fan, but I'm just concerned. What do you guys think?

You think he looked slow in Chicago? I wouldn't say he looked slow nor really fast to me though. I certainly liked his speed over Storm Johnson though. I will say this. I do not want to see Fisch calling anymore sweeps or any kind of running movement that requires him to shift east or west. He truly is a north and south runningback. He reminds me a bit of Alstott, just not nearly as stocky or top heavy. And he doesn't have a big enough waist line for me to compare him to Bettis. On that one solid run he had up the middle though he reminded me a bit of Stacey Mack way back when I was a kid and he was here for a bit.

Every site I've seen has him at 231, not 240. And I didn't say 4.6 is bad. I just don't think he plays as fast as his 40 time.

You figured this out after watching less than ten carries for the Jags. In the words of some poster I can't remember the name of, "You good"!

Those were his combine measurements.  I saw a site that listed his rookie weight as 234.  I'm sure with a few seasons in the NFL he's bumped that up to near 240.  He's also fast whether or not he's 240 or 231.
