I would be embarrassed for her but I can't take her seriously when she comes on stage hammered.

What's funny is that I vaguely remembered seeing Carey performing her signature Christmas song that night on TV and changing the channel.  I wasn't interested in seeing a former icon lip sync or sing badly (I was sure it would be one of those).  She used to be considered one of the best singers in the world, but recently it's been clear she's lost it.  You could be right, but I don't recall her doing any lip-syncing, which surprised me a bit. The last time I saw her on network TV she couldn't sing at all.  This may have been the comeback that never was.

I don't really understand this.  Even if she was hammered, since when has that prevented anyone from singing?  

 

My guess is artists more-so get hammered to sing.

Maybe if she had more back-up dancers her zombie like meandering across the stage would have gone unnoticed.

In my opinion, a lip-synched/mimicked performance is understandable in that environment, if not even prudent. You don't get a proper soundcheck, if you get one at all. Even trying a live vocal over a backing track can have it's pitfalls.


What's strange to me is how a simple technical failure could impact a seasoned professional like Mariah so greatly. I could understand it if it were some 17-year-old singer with limited stage experience. I don't think her heart was really in it. That, coupled with the inebriation led to this result. A confluence of circumstances, really.

Exactly. That wasn't her first rodeo by a long shot. Not a fan of hers, but Christina Aguilera would have handled it and owned it.

My guess is she would need auto tune to even sound a tenth as good as she does in the studio and would have sounded terrible live. That is the problem with the music industry today. People rely on technology too much over talent.

Meh, its hard to sing a song you cant hear. I feel her for that.


She's so unlikable that I don't feel too bad for her though.

Sucks at singing when sober. Sucks worse at singing when hammered.

Anyone remember Ashley Simpson's lip sync issues haha?
