The Jags know what they have with Brewster; he is not a rookie.  If Caldwell felt that Brewster was a solid center, I don't believe he would have gone after Mack.  The "he's gotten stronger in the offseason" was an attempt to build back up his confidence, as there was no other alternative.

I don't know, I think if you can get the best guy in the league at a position then you try to get that guy regardless of who is on your current roster.

I think many would agree that the Jags offered Mack knowing it was a near certainty that Cleveland would match the offer. The notion that the team is trying to "build back up his confidence"  by lying about his progress makes no sense to me. Why would his confidence need built up? I've never heard this was an issue from anyone associated with the team. Caldwell would been far more active seeking another quality center if this was the case IMO.

I'd imagine, and this is just a guess mind you, that his confidence may need to be built up from him getting his tail whipped by every player he's faced since entering the league.
This is why the Jaguars were willing to throw so much money at Alex Mack.

As of now there is no good player(s) for the right guard and center position.  You have a rookie guard and the other choices are bad to worse.

We will take a hard look at cuts at the end of training camp of other teams. Center is still a problem. It would not surprise me if Mac started

Imagine, guess...OK

Quote:McClendon has been splitting first team reps with Linder as well and has been doing a good job according to reports. It could be a case of the Jags just wanting to cross train him as a G/C or it could be a case of "this guy is good and we have to find a spot for him on the field".
After what we were dealing with at the end of the season with injuries I don't mind having a guy learning multiple rollls
Brewster back as No 1 C, Linder No 1 RG for third straight practice.#Jaguars
