Apollo 11 patch flown on 1st moon landing to launch with astronauts to Mars
When American astronauts make the next "giant leap" by launching to Mars, they will bring with them a memento from the first moon landing 45 years ago.
NASA on Monday will present the Kennedy Space Center in Florida with a mission patch that Apollo 11 crew mates Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins carried to the moon in 1969, collectSPACE has learned. The patch will be held at the spaceport until the first crew is ready to lift off for the Red Planet on a mission NASA plans for the 2030s.

Shouldn't make some sort of attempt at establishing a colony on the moon before we jump 30 million miles to land on Mars? It seems like we should master one thing before we get ahead of ourselves.Hell, by then it'll be 60+ years since the last landing, and I doubt anyone on earth will even have experience at all.

We know we can get to the moon, there's no point in wasting resources going back. We need to shoot for Mars in order to expand our abilities for space travel.

There's still so much we don't know about the moon. I don't see why we can't concentrate on both, especially since we know both locations have pockets of water.
And nobody needs to worry because the space program has all but been dismantled. While scientific studies continue, everything beyond that has been scrubbed. We have to hitch-hike with Russia just to get to the space station these days.

We do know enough about the moon to know that it doesn't satisfy our needs for long term space exploration. It's akin to staging a Mt. Everest expedition from the end of your street. In order to tackle the challenges of manned inter-planetary space flight we have to do it. Traveling to the moon and Mars simultaneously is cost prohibitive.

I think both are necessary.
We don't have experience colonizing other planets, satellites, bla bla bla... shouldn't we practice that on the closest one to earth? What purpose does Mars serve on expanding our ability to travel space? I'm not saying you're wrong, only that I don't know. Isn't it virtually just different calculations on a computer to assist in the landing and all that jazz. Sure, there's probably the potential for life and that's swell, but if there isn't life on Mars, what have we gained from it?

we'd be better off focusing on stations in outer-space than wasting time and money going to dead planets.

Mars and the moon have very different atmospheres.
