Andre deserves to go to a contender, if that is what he really wants. I think he could have gone about it a bit better, but I am sure there is much more to the story. The Texans are better with him on the field, but the type of character he has shown over the years deserves to be rewarded. If that reward is in the form of a trade to a contender, then so be it.

This whole "deserves to go to a contender" thing always confuses me.

Why does he deserve anything other than being paid for his services? Did he donate last year's salary to the Sisters of the Poor so he could be traded to the Patriots?

He's a professional athlete. He deserves to be paid, and he most certainly is very well paid, and in turn the team and fans deserve his best effort.

Do nice guys deserve more than less known guys?

Agreed, I don't get the "deserves" stuff. It was only a few years ago that he signed a new contract when he could have waited half of a season and been a free agent or forced them to use the franchise tag on him at a time when they didn't have the space for it.

He needs to shut up and play. He wasn't worried about the fact that Houston is a terrible place to play when he was picking up that signing bonus check, now he needs to suck it up.

"Deserving" is just a personal opinion of mine and others based on his selfless character over the years. Like other athletes, yes, he does donate time and money to several worthwhile causes. But, in an age of NFL diva's, Andre is a breath of fresh air in the way he conducts his business and thus, in my opinion, "deserves".

Agree, disagree, makes no difference. The whole situation is out of our hands.

ok.....this makes 2 times in less than a week that I agreed with the above poster.... I feel ill.
Quote:Andre Johnson has been loyal thus far. He deserves a chance at a championship before he leaves.

As long as he's a Texan...to heck with him and his championship chances.
i get the "deserves" philosophy... sad thing is most recivers dont have enough impact to really control the over all direction of the team as far as pushing them to post season and beyond... look at the greats today, fitz (one superbowl but no win), megatron(no superbowls and one or 2 post seasons), andre johnson(no superbowls and one post season)... all those guys have completely dominated their positions for years and havent been rewarded with the ultimate prize.. at some point its about more than the money.... when you do all you possibly can on your end and your team is the reason you never make to play in the biggest game, i understand the frustration.

Joel Corry of the NFP breaks down some of the language in Johnson's contract and demonstrates how he doesn't have a lot of leverage to force a trade:

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"...The Texans essentially hold all of the cards in the dispute with Johnson. It would be a surprise if Johnson’s trade request was granted or he had a lengthy preseason holdout largely because of the financial ramifications
..."

Absolutely agree with everything said here.

When he signed the contract he probably thought the front office would be doing everything they could to improve the team but it turned out after a couple seasons to be the opposite. He also now has a new coaching system, new offense....etc.

He signed the contract in hopes of stability with the arrow pointing up.

This isn't what he predicted and probably not what they promised him.

So what you're basically saying is that he wasn't smart enough to recognize that the team wouldn't make it over the hump?

Like I said, he could have had his choice of teams, but instead of waiting for free agency he grabbed the money.

Or its like saying you're an in demand employee who gets a really attractive job offer from a couple agencies but your supervisor promises you a promotion soon at your current agency if you turn them down but then he never fulfills his promise.
I think I read that the Texans would have to eat like 12 million in dead money even if they trade him. It doesn't look like Dre will be moving anywhere.
He'll be a Patriot at some point in the not so distant future.

That's what I'm thinking as well.  Pairing him with a guy like Brady would certainly be interesting to watch.

Yup.  He's been embarrassing our DB's for years.  He can go fly a kite for all I care.

I'd doubt it if the Texans have to eat 12 MIL in dead money.
Another excellent talent that wasted his great career on a crappy team.

Nice guys do deserve more than bad guys.  In this case, though, "deserves got nothing to do with it"

Probably, and will be about as effective as Patriots Tory Holt, Fred Taylor, and Chad Johnson when he gets there.

Kind of like Maurice Jones-Drew.
