Rumors are beginning to swirl regarding Marvin Lewis’ future with the Bengals.

After the Bengals’ first losing season since 2010, Lewis is coming under fire and many fans want him out of Cincinnati. On Sunday morning’s Cooley & Kevin show on ESPN 980, host and former Redskins player Chris Cooley suggested this will be Lewis’ last year in Cincinnati.

“From somebody I know in Cincinnati, Marvin Lewis will retire at the end of this year, slash, be asked to retire. Which is the only information I know,” Cooley said during hour two of the show (beginning at the 22 minute mark).

No Marvin Lewis as a candidate.
I live just outside Cincinnati and this is the first I'm hearing of this. I listen to local sports radio everyday.

Well [BLEEP], there goes one of my top coaching candidates if true.

I mean, I know age is only a number, but isn't he a little young to be considering retirement?

In the wise words of Rick James...

Very deceptive headline.   Marvin Lewis to Retire.  Then your actual post says someone speculated that he might retire.
I live near Cincy, and I haven't heard anything about this yet (as someone else mentioned above).

It's speculation based on what Cooley has "heard".

I doubt he would lie about something like that. But, it's pure speculation at this point.
And its false: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...next-year/

Marvin Lewis is a very interesting coach IMO. He takes his teams to the playoffs frequently then does nothing once he gets there. Hard to get a pulse on whether he is over or under achieving at this point.

As someone who lives in the Cincinnati area and sees most of the Bengals' games I can say with almost 100% certainty that Lewis is an underachiever. His teams the past few seasons have been among the most talented in the NFL. He has stars on both sides of the ball. When you have pass rushers like Geno Atkins and Carlos Dunlap and an offensive weapon like A.J. Greene and a passer who is at least a top 10-15 QB in the NFL, there is no reason why he should be win less.

In reading the article,  I can envision a scenario in which another NFL team is interested in hiring Marvin Lewis as their new HC and Mike Brown decides to let him move on.  Knowing,  he wouldn't have to pay Lewis any additional money.

Could be. I can almost guarantee unless that happens, Lewis will be with the Bengals until the end of his contract. Mike Brown is extremely loyal and many times holds onto coaches and players way past their expiration dates, because of personal bonds he forms with them. It's one of his shortcomings.

If Marvin Lewis moves on,  arguably the most difficult component to replace effectively is the Bengals drafting results during the time Lewis was the team's HC.  Because the Bengals have a relatively small scouting staff,   the input of the coaches in their draft process is that much more important.   it wouldn't surprise me if Mike Brown promoted one of the Bengals Assistant Coaches to the HC position.

Could be, but from everything I hear, Mike Brown is in almost total control of the drafting. The fans here are still mad that Lewis wasn't fired and replaced by Zimmer when he left.

One thing that likely would have been different under Mike Zimmer is he never would have been as tolerant with the lack of discipline penalties the Bengals have made in recent seasons.

The Bengals HC job would be attractive from the standpoint of a talented roster and a loyal owner.   On the other hand,  this is a small budget franchise,  including one that's not going to come close to breaking the bank on a contract for a HC,    If Marvin Lewis leaves,  the most likely outcome likely is either an assistant coach on the Bengals current staff is promoted or an assistant coach from elsewhere is hired.
