I know that it was en vogue for some to talk about how "historically bad" our team was last year - especially the Defense - but the Dallas defense actually was historically bad. Only one other team in the League ever allowed more First Downs and only two gave up more yards. Were talking '81 Baltimore Colts level of bad here. They also surrendered over six yards per play on average.
As a fan who only really watches Dallas whenever they are the prime time game, I had no idea that they were that inept. And it only looks to get worse since they have lost three starters off of that Defense in D. Ware, J. Hatcher, and S. Lee. I hope Garret has his seat belt buckled.
The game against Green Bay last year was one of the worst performances by a defense I've seen in recent years. And that was without Aaron Rodgers out injured for the Packers.
I live in Texas, and what you have to understand is, it's Tony Romo's fault. Always. Facts? Who needs facts? Romo only!

That is the shame of it.... Romo all the blame all the time. Boys fans are going to be disappointed when he is gone.
What? I thought it was all Rob Ryan's fault

Yeah. It's going to be hilarious. Everyone calls him a choke artist, but crap, he puts up 38-42 points and the d lets the other team drive right up the field to take the lead! How much does the guy have to do?
I think they're still sore over the fumbled snap in the playoffs way back when.
Romo is a quality starter, but he can't make up for all that is going wrong around him. He has his share of flaws and all, but he's more on the "asset" side than the "liability" one.
I think everyone knows who / what is the real problem in Big D, but since he owns the place he gets to do whatever he wants.
Part of the problem with the cowboys defense was that their offense was good enough to put pressure on other teams to score. That's the only reason the Jaguars weren't setting records for all time futility on defense the last few seasons.
The Jaguars defense could barely fight its way out a wet paper bag, but other teams would let up since they were leading by 20 at halftime. In the cowboys case their offense made other teams keep the pedal down.
^ So the Cowboy's offense is just supposed to not score then?
The fumbled snap would have been a Romo touchdown (or extra point, I forget what the situation was) if stinkin' little Martin Gramatica (the place kicker) had thrown a block or just gotten in the way of the guy coming from the right side. Instead, he went all Garo Yepremian and stood there all befuddled.
Dallas fan here. The D was horrible last year. However, they actually played better without Lee. Ware has really slipped the past couple of seasons and Jerry actually did the right thing by releasing him. He is not built for the 4-3 and not only did it show toward the end of the season, but you saw it every game in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Hatcher was solid last year...1st time in a 4-3. He had said Dallas stunted his growth with him playing in the 3-4 all those years. Yet he signs with Washington who run a 3-4. Not to mention he is on record saying he did not want to play hurt last year so there was no bad tape on him.
As for the D line, there is better all around depth this year. They will not be pulling guys off the street to play D line. The corners are going to play more man and rightfully so. That is what Carr and Claiborne excel at. Monte had then playing a lot of zone. The D will be improved this season, can't do any worse.
* Plus they need to run the ball more. They have been pass happy. Keep that D off the field a little longer. The O line is actually a strength, so even with Linehan coming over from Detroit, I expect more run...but who knows.
