That's the thing that amazes me. There are people out there who don't want to see Jacksonville grow as a city. They'd prefer we remain Cowford.

As far at the Shipyards, that is an area with so much potential. The Magic are in the process of doing something similar in Orlando.

Just to bounce off what you said about growing Jacksonville, it takes investment to grow a city, or anything for that matter. So long as the investment is done right, the long run payoff is worth the short run cost/debt.


Like you mentioned, improving the "front door" can add incentive to other investors to come in and provide high end housing plans. I think sometimes citizens look at municipal spending only with a short term mind set, which is a shame.


Another question I have, would the eventual upgrade of the ship yard be a first step towards constructing residential high rises near the facility? My step dad once mentioned there were such plans a few years back, but apparently the fizzled out?

I noticed this too. This too me is similar to what New England did with Patriots Place. Being a small market team Orlando is wise for doing it and the Jags would be very wise to also do something with the Shipyards that could pay off for the franchise.

 

 

I really wish the Maxwell House and county jail weren’t across the street. Their presence in that prime spot is another eyesore on what should be a jewel area bridging downtown and the sports complex.  

It would be awesome if they put some nice condos mixed in with some unique higher end restaurants with a mix of pubs and clubs. Having a nice little casino couldn't hurt either.


The Pearl Brewery was a rotted out dust farm for decades in San Antonio. All of a sudden its a vibrant location with a whole new feel for the north end of the River Walk. Jacksonville could do something similar but a little more lively. Take a look: http://atpearl.com/about

I dont mind the Maxwell House plant. Its sort of a landmark. Now the jail...embarrassing. Like having a School Board building on the river.

The Shipyards was a project that was estimated at 1 Billion dollars. In my job I recently retired from it was on our radar screen for at least 5 years. We thought it was moving when the Berkman Plaza II was started. Of course 2008 hit and all came to a end as you can see by the eye sore left.

 

The City of Jacksonville is wanting way to much capital for the land and also the old SS Generator plant land. There have been several proposal's for this land that have feel through.

 

The city needs to help Khan anyway they can and get this thing going. It has become ridiculous to people in construction planning.

I think a single stand alone casino (not a Vegas style destination resort) would be an absolute home run for the shipyards. Combine it with shops, pubs/clubs, high rise condos/apartments and something like an observation wheel.  

 

I still think relocating the baseball park there could also be a good idea. Angle it towards the skyline.

 

Across the river on the huge amount of vacant property put an aquarium or if you really want to go big a Six flags with a singular focus on coaster/thrill rides.

 

 

 

But wait, we’re talking about Jacksonville (which I love btw), so nothing is going to happen. We’re dreaming too big.

You're not thinking too big - if you can come up with the funding. And I thought casinos aren't allowed in Florida, unless you're affiliated with the Seminole tribe (the real ones.)

 

I know people like to make fun of the taxpayers as uneducated rubes, but they (we) have been burned more than once regarding the Shipyards, so cut them some slack when they roll their eyes when they hear some politician asking for tax money to help a billionaire "improve" the city.

 

Some people are still waiting for their dividend check from Wayne Weaver for the profit he made from the sale of the Jaguars.
