Matt Jones wasn't a success story, but he was getting better until his cocaine arrest.

Thats stupid.  The guy was crazy talented and made some amazing plays.  His problem wasnt a football or athletic problem.  It was a headcase drug problem.  If he had his head on straight and worked hard, he would have been a really good professional player.

King wasn't necessarily wrong on that. Jones was seriously talented, that wasn't what his problem was.

But the list is a fine example of why reading too much into workouts can backfire.

He definitely would have had a chance to be a really decent receiver had he kept his nose clean. We'll never know though.

Matt Jones was a guy who was on the verge of finally starting to figure it out when he decided to go and do a stupid thing.

He squandered what had the potential to be a solid career because of his athletic ability. It's a shame because there was an opportunity here for him to really be a difference maker, but like most things that happened during that time frame, it turned to crap and unraveled quickly.

DE Mike Mamula should have been on this list.   When it comes to Combine workout warriors that didn't come remotely close to living up to their draft billing,  Mamula is the first player that comes to mind on this end.

Jones would catch the ball and fall backwards.  He had no RAC skills or head-for-it.

I wouldn't say MJ was on the verge of putting it all together.  He didn't suit a full season since his rookie year and his yards per reception dropped a full 4 yards from his career best in 2006 (15.7 per catch) to his final year on the team in 2008 (11.7 per catch).  I think his public appearance representing the team at a local elementary school and reading to the kids in a wife beater and flip flops indicates he might have had the problem in the first place which likely impacted his play on the field.  I never understood how a guy that fast was so slow coming off the line.  His last season here set a career low for him with 2 TDs.

Some people really can't handle having money.. In college, when they really don't have it, they're the epitome of hard work and dedication.. Give them an NFL style paycheck and WATCH OUT!!

Ill never forget he dropped the game winning pass in the endzone against Cleveland on the last play of the game.

The ball just completely doinked right off his hands.

He had zero release off the line skills. And it looked like he was running in water logged cleated.

He truly didnt care about football. Once he got paid he gave up on football.
Somebody needs to conduct a full scientific investigation on how Matt Jones ran a 4.37.

Um.... drugs are bad..... okay

He ejected early in his career.  The real shame is Jimmy Smith (unrelated to point of article).  If that man hadn't faced the drug demons.... WOW!!!!!

Alligator Arms.

He had a nitrous bottle implanted in his spine before the combine.
