I'd still use a mid-rounder on a QB if I'm Caldwell  -  and I'd make damn sure that the new kid, Allen, and Bortles are provided with a QB coach that will light a fire under their butts to improve.

Quote:If we dominate the clots like the tacks.....I'd be pretty good with this.

Maybe, the team was just saying "we love gus" just to keep a face on things when really they were aching to be rid of him as well.

They sure responded to Doug Marrone.

I think marrone is not afraid of doing what may have to be done with bortles

I think they were too caught up in trying to save Gus' job.  I think it was probably a huge distraction.

But of course this is pure speculation.

Quote:I don't see why it is so hard for people to see that bortles was tanking it in to get gus out of here

I watched my own miami hurricanes do the very same thing vs clemson last season in that 58-0 loss

If management has it's head up it's bad word removed, then someone else has got to do something to get the ball rolling
I can't see how he could be tanking it.  He cost himself a $100M contract and maybe a starting job just to get rid of Gus?  Gus handcuffed the offense as evidenced by all the downfield plays and ARob targets on Saturday but I can't believe anyone was intentionally sabotaging the offense to get rid of him.
I think we still need one more edge rusher. Also we need at least 2 new offensive linemen. I think the Jags pick up Bortles 5 year option and maybe draft a QB on the 3-4th round

These were Blake's mechanics on the completion to Arob and also Lee's TD on the very first drive. Looks awfully similar to how it's been all year to me. The results were definitely better, but the process was still pretty darn ugly...which obviously happens plenty in small sample size collections.

I fear the passing games awakening was more of the common interim HC boost compounded by a reeling defense that has given up 300+ yards and multiple passing TDs in 7 of the last 10 games more than an actual tangible change.

Bortles still dropped the ball prior to release fairly often vs the tacks, but I thought his footwork looked better and he was stepping (or at least leaning) into his throws more consistently.  There was less of that flat-footed and off-the-back-foot stuff going on.

He looked more natural and relaxed, but some of that is unfortunately likely a result of having little to lose at this point.

I saw improvement Sunday, but he's still a big gamble to start in 2017 in my mind and I'd like to see him have legit competition.

Im thinking that making a coaching change has defiantly shown some potential in our team.Yes it's just the Titans and Mariota got injured but we know we have a good team and all we need was Gus to be gone. Now we just need to play well next game and if we do Marrone could make his case to be our Head coach. We also might not need to upgrade as many positions as we thought before.

I'm gonna need more than game to convince me about Blake. He played better, significantly so to be sure, but his throws are still not what they should be.

But they were better...maybe they can continue to improve. hopefully.

The talent/potential showed up and actually shined.

We still better have a fallback plan at QB.

We need to wait and see on Fowler next year but can create pressure with blitzes if needed.

And we still need a HC and staff that is going to "coach e'm up and get the most out of every player/position.  One game that looked good doesn't prove we have a solution.

I will say that I think there's a consensus that we have fewer "holes" on the roster than we have had in a long time.  You get the right coaches, add a few pieces to the roster and this team should win the AFC South next year, hands down!

As I mentioned earlier - much of the improvement from Blake Sunday wasn't necessarily from his arm.  Footwork and hip turn were factors IMO.

This gif is essentially the same throw he botched twice to Lee early in the season that turned into 2 INTs.   On one of his attempts he literally stood flat-footed with his feet shoulder width apart and threw the ball well behind Lee without stepping forward at all in a clean pocket.

The difference in this completion is apparent as he clearly has his feet in better position and turns his hips into the throw more naturally.

It's something to build on, but I'd still love to see a mid-rounder brought in to compete.

Quote:The good thing is, this is Bortles' 3rd season, so he is under contract for next year, and if we pick up the 5th year option, that's 2 more years to figure out if we have to give him the big contract or not.  As of today, I would  for sure pick up the 5th year option.   I think it's worth the risk, and if he has a good year next year, and we haven't picked up the 5th year option, we will have to break the bank to re-sign him, with the risk that he'll decide to go into free agency.   So, definitely we need to pick up that 5th year option.  I want that extra year of evaluation with the chance to negotiate at the end of year 4 without a gun to our head.

I'd be shocked if we picked up the 5th year option based on what he did this year regardless of what happens against the clots.  It would be in the neighborhood of $18+ million guaranteed for that 5th year.  The safer bet would be to let him play for a contract next year and if he's mediocre or better then franchise him.  The 5th year option decision will have to be made by mid-May.  It's a no-brainer at this point IMO not to pick it up.
Also, I almost expect us to dominate the clots this weekend.  Our guys are playing for pride more so than the clots who were just eliminated from playoff contention this past weekend I believe.  And our interim coach is coaching for a more permanent gig.  I'm assuming Pagano is safe or that the outcome of this weekend's game is irrelevant to any decision being made to keep or fire him.  I'm not sure I would read anything into this weekend's game unless the Jags come out flat and uninspired.  That would be more telling than anything else to me.

What now?

We hire Gus back. The talent is obviously there. Gus just needs one more chance!

One more chance!

One more chance!

You're right.  I didn't realize, the 5th year option for a QB selected in the top 10 is close to $18 million.   I was under the mistaken assumption that the 5th year option just added a year at the player's current salary.   Thanks for pointing this out.

We are 6 point underdogs.

Money isn't an issue, though if he has a great year next year it would. It's also going to require input from the new coach, so that decision will give us some indication of the direction in the next few weeks.
Quote:Well you said yourself in the game day thread it's clear Gus was the problem.

I'm not advocating keeping everyone, hell I'm still not a huge Marrone fan, but had we played like that every week no one would complain with the staff
He obviously has selective amnesia.
