Quote:most defenses in the NFL today dont even have actual FS and SS, its just considered 2 safeties. understandably in the defense we run here, one safety is still asked to play close to the line a lot so being stronger and better in run support is good. but the traditional FS and SS set up is really a thing of the past. it is laughable. lets move bortles to DE. he has the body and size to do it, so we should do it right? no. let the players play their positions and let the coaches and front office decide if a player should be written off.
In Seattle, Gus' old defense, the Safeties are not interchangeable as the above suggests. Earl Thomas is clearly the guy they use for single high Safety and Chancellor is the thumper.
Telvin Smith CAN NOT be used at single high Safety. (well, I mean, he
can....but he'd suck at it and the defense would be worse for it).
Telvin could possibly play Cyprien's position, but I doubt thats happening either.
As pirk said, FS is either going to be Guy or Evans.
Hopefully next offseason we get someone in there thats a bit higher ceiling'd.
Quote:Did anyone see how small Tsmith was when he was signing his contract. .?
I saw him in person two weeks ago at camp. He's thin right now. But he has time to add weight. He has the frame to support it.

Just don't force it quickly.
A gradual increase in weight over time is better.

They won't. He was on local radio yesterday talking about this exact topic. Smith said Gus stressed that he doesn't have to add weight quickly.

Good. At least we know Gus is being smart about this. If this situation happened back when we had Jack Del Bozo the clown as head coach, he'd be ordering Smith to put on as much weight as possible, ASAP.
Gus is more cerebral.

He only did that with defensive ends who were getting steamrolled at the POA on running plays.
The great Coughlin tried the same for years with Fernando Bryant, btw... :whistling:

I don't remember TC telling Fernando to put on weight.
I remember him insisting on dropping bryce Paup in coverage.
I remember him fining Tavian Banks and another guy for being late to practice when they flipped their car on the Main Street Bridge.
I remember those inexplicable things. Not putting weight on Fernando.

He had him put on about 10 pounds when he arrived to get him to 180.
Bryant said he didn't like to play that heavy, but he did it. He then dropped back to about 170 after his foot injury and didn't put it back on.
Quote:Guy should be the FS
Sounds like he's making a push for the job.
Zero chance.
I'd rather see them work Colvin in at FS, if they're going to have somebody change positions.

Yeah at least Colvin has some experience at Safety
Karl Joseph or Derron Smith
I think Guy could be our FS of the future

Yep. Most teams mix and match their safeties and disguise coverages and looks. Finding an Earl Thomas clone is a luxory, not a necessity. If you need to have a Earl Thomas free safety to effectively run your defense, good luck. They come around once every 10 years, and they get drafted in the top 15 picks because there are 31 other teams looking for one too. Just like 31 other teams were looking for an Ed Reed clone for about 10 years before Earl Thomas came along.
Quote:The college LB to S move has been done successfully a few times.
The two that leap to mind are:
Carnell Lake, who played OLB at UCLA before moving to S with the Steelers.
Darren Woodson made the move from Arizona St LB to S with Dallas.
But both played SS, not FS.
Conceptually it's possible, but if Smith were to make the move, most likely it would be to SS.
To me that would be a waste, considering Cyprien is already back there.
Keep him at LB. He already understands the position. It's just a matter of him putting on weight and getting stronger, as opposed to learning an entirely new position.
True but we have also seen the move from S to LB

Ahh...well...whether it was due to the weight thing or not, it's too bad he didn't develop into a shut down CB for us.

Good observation.
It's interesting to see guys change positions and to see how players from some positions transition relatively seamlessly from one position to the other, while other players can't transition into other positions.
I think Telvin Smith to FS falls squarely into the latter category.
Telvin Smith is listed at 6'3 218. Geno Hayes, playing the same position, is listed at 6'1 226. I agree that Smith needs to add some strength and bulk, but he is not that measurably different than Hayes in terms of weight.

Wait, I thought Gus was Mr. 200 word vocabulary....?
