Quote:Remember how awful Henne had been in camp and preseason? Gabbert looked legitimately better than him...
Despite popular opinion Blaine Gabbert can quarterback.

He can throw the ball well, his problem is he crumbles in game situations when a real pass rush is coming at him. Coaches have tried time and time again to play him in hope he can get over that but sadly for the Jags he couldn't so he was virtually useless in a real NFL game.

It's not surprising he could beat out Henne in camp and preseason when the pass rush doesn't exist or is minimal.

Sounds like a scientific claim.   You mean like beating Joe Haden for a game winning TD throw against the Browns?    Seems like he had 3 throws that day, including a perfectly thrown pass right over Cecil's shoulder in the corner of the endzone with under a minute to play.

The Jags went 3-3 in those 6 games.  4 of those 6 games were decided by a TD or less.

Quote:I think this is a stupid question because the OP knew what Caldwell said about sitting Bortles for a year. When the Bengals told Carson Palmer he would be a bench warmer his first season they meant it: He did not take a single snap in the regular season. Next question?

Boy, you're back in force.
Quote:Because it's not about 2014.   The Jaguars aren't winning a Superbowl with Bortles or Henne in 2014. .

Bortles isn't Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck.   He didn't grow up with a former NFL QB for a dad who taught him flawless mechanics since he was old enough to hold a football, and then go on to play 3-4 years in a pro style offense in college to prepare for the NFL.    He played in a single wing option offense T in high school and then went on to play a few years in a in a single read college offense heavy on the option and then declared early.    He's got a TON of learning to do just in basic footwork and mechanics, without heaping on all the responsibility learning the offense, opponent gameplanning every week and the simple matter of trying to lead the team to wins.   The reason you drafted him #3 is that he would have been the #1 pick in next year's draft, and the fact that once these mechanical issues are addressed you might have an Andrew Luck caliber player.

Further, having a QB in Henne who already knows all the offensive assignments and can fluidly run the offense helps in the development of Joekel, Lee, Saunders, Robinson, etc.    They have enough on their plate with their own learning curve without having to worry if the QB knows what his progression reads and assignments are on top of that.    In the final 6 games combined, once Henne got more familiar with playing in Fisch's offense, he had ~85 QB Rating.  That's with virtually no running game and no real receiving threat other than Shorts, particularly outside the hashmarks.   He's not someone you hang your hat on as a franchise, but he's someone who can run the offensive effectively and efficiently enough that he can string together drives and he won't hold back the progress of all the other young offensive players singlehandedly.   It's hard for those offensve players to get their game reps in when they are going 3 and out every drive.

Very well thought out post. Slow clap.

How about the bonehead int in the end of the endzone in the last game.
Boy, this poll isn't going quite the way the OP had hoped.

Cause they are following what Caldwell said. Not their heart.

...and the mind makes wiser choices than the heart...
The bigger question is what if Henne plays pretty decent and gets us in the playoffs?  This is hypothetical so no "Playoffs!?  Playoffs?! Rabble Rabble Henne sucks comments"

If this happens how can you even start Bortles next year?  It's a stretch but it would be a good problem to have.

In that case you keep Bortles on the bench. If Henne can take you to the playoffs no need to mess up that chemistry.

If Henne carries this team into the post season (not completely unfathomable, but highly unlikely), then he's the starting QB for this team for the duration, and he just did this team a huge favor by actually creating trade value.

Bortles is the QB of the future, and at the latest, that will happen is on opening day next year.

Henne making a run into the playoffs gives you a chance at acquiring an extra draft pick for a player who still has a year on a fairly affordable contract.

That's how I see it...That is best case scenario.

I created the poll to get the opinion of the board.  I did not hope one way or the other
HELLO...

Let's not forget Henne's tendacies of Mucking It Up. He'll get you to the Red Zone just to throw an INT by forcing it...

If Bortles continues to progress at the pace he's started and if/when he outplays Henne... Why wouldn't he be the Day One Starter? Allow the rookie QB and WRs (2) to get sooner aquainted... Why Not?

My Bad CSIII...

NH3...
Dudes, it's a good problem to have. Let them play it out smartly like they have with everything else.

No. Every move must be scrutinized.
Seeing as how Caldwell hasn't said something along the lines of "May the best man win" and instead he's said that Henne will start, I think odds are is that Bortles is on the bench week 1.  You never know, though.  If he just learns a ton and lights it up preseason (especially with first team reps), then it may be hard to sit him.

I really don't believe that the #3 overall pick wont start on week 1, if not by week 3.  You dont draft (or pay a #3 player) that high unless you feel he's the most ready to start at QB.

I can see how that train of thought existed in football history and you could be correct on the timing of his starting.

If Blake lights it up and the Jags feel he is ready to go. Then we could see him sooner than later.

On the other hand, there is not pressure or expectations from the Jags, the pressure and expectations

are those Blake brings to camp with him and I am sure he is eager to be the man.

I do not subscribe to the "if you draft em high, they gotta start"

On the other hand, most of those drafted high start sooner than later.

HeadSlap
Henne starts the season. Morris finishes it.
