Quote:More like dumb. GM is still caught up on old school measurables and not whether this guy can just flat out ball or not. Manziel will have a better NFL career than Bortles.
Quote:So I guess Brees and Russell WIlson are busts.
So let me get this straight. You insult the GM because of the "old school measurables" even tho there are QB's in this league who have nearly the same measurables. But then you use comparisons who have the same measurables as Manziel to prove your point?
There have been more successful QBs in this league that have the same measurables as Bortles than who have the same measurables as Manziel.
Bortles has the potential to be the best QB in this draft class. That's what you're drafting for. Not who's the best today..but who's the best tomorrow.
Quote:Plenty of people mocked Bortles in the Top 10 though. Nobody mocked Alualu in the Top 20 for the most part (I didn't see any in any case). So it's not THAT far against the consensus. And his scouts independently came to the same conclusion.
I hated the Alualu pick -- I still remember it vividly. Our internet was out. Our T.V. was out. So I was sitting in my car listening to the draft on the Radio. Redskins homers because I live in Virginia. They announced Tyson Alualu. My first thought was "WHO?" And when our phone lines were finally fixed the next day, I was still very upset about it. (Granted, I wanted Jimmy Clausen, and was happy we didn't take Tebow... but back then I didn't follow football nearly as well as I do now. I was also a fan of Joe Flacco when he came out)
Bortles isn't so far off the consensus that it makes you go "We took.. who?" We're actually getting decent grades from most for the pick, aside from the people who are like 'HERP DERP he won't get to sit like he needs to cuz he's behind Chad Henne HERP DERP"
I guess that I meant the 'brave' portion seemed to apply to both situations. Bortles is different than Alualu in that he is viewed to need more time than most in order to develop whereas Alualu just seemed like a "Needs" pick but both regimes took their guy that went against some opinions. I talked myself into the Alualu thing and while I don't necessarily regret it, I feel like there was probably a lot of talent / value left on the board when he was drafted.
I'm hoping that Bortles lives up to all of that game tape that he produced at UCF.
Quote:How did that turn out with Blaine Gabbert. He had all the measurables, height-weight-strong arm.
Oh yeah because Bortles is the spittin' image of Gabbert. Because they are the same height, they are the same prospect and have all the same weaknesses.

There have been a lot, and I mean a lot of QBs with the prototypical measureables that have been busts.
Quote:There have been a lot, and I mean a lot of QBs with the prototypical measureables that have been busts.
And there have been just as many who have been successful.
The point is, you don't know which you've got unless you dare to take a chance. If Bortles turns out to be a bust, so be it. If he turns out to be what they expect he will, this team has finally gotten their franchise guy. We won't know until he's on the field. Declaring him a bust until that happens seems a little short sighted.
Quote:Not to be a downer, but I remember thinking the same thing about Gene Smith with the Alualu pick.
This is how I was with Gabbert, I would've rather stay put and get Dalton or Kaepernick, but I liked the fact that Gene wanted the "best" QB.
But, until Caldwell proves me wrong, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here. I'd rather have Watkins or Mack with a trade back up to get Bridgewater, but that's just my opinion.
Quote:There have been a lot, and I mean a lot of QBs with the prototypical measureables that have been busts.
Wow. Didn't realize this. Stunner.
Also, doesn't Bortles pass the 26/27/60 test?
Started at least 27 games.
Got a 28 on his Wonderlic
65.7% completion percentage. Had minimum 60% completion percentage every year in college football too.
I like Gus and Caldwell (for now), but I have zero confidence in any first rounder we pick. This isn't a shot against the GM and Coach, but the organization itself. It will take years before I ever gain that confidence back. I hope Bortles does well and I will give him a couple years, but I will not be getting my hopes up.
Everytime I want to believe, I then remember the past 10 years drafting Byron Leftwich, Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, Reggie Nelson, Derrick Harvey, Alualu, Gabbert, and Blackmon and slink back into reality.

Probably time to head over to the Cleveland boards now!

The point leads to another point.
What are we talking about here?
Those that point to the Cleveland Browns do so as to suggest it's evidence that someone other than just the Jacksonville Jaguars actually wanted Blake Bortles.
We're talking about the Cleveland Browns as if they know a thing or two about quarterbacks in order to wipe away the fingerprints.
Constant battle cries like the repetitive mocking of David Caldwell's "Even if he's released" is demonstrative of wanton thought.
The pick was in and almost immediately the TU was washing their hands of Blake Bortles.
Is Blake Bortles the last revenge for Tebow or just another in a long genealogy of bad draft advice from TU worms?
