Quote:Shocked for sure. Thought he would have gone the Manziel if he went QB. Like its been said Bortles seems to have the highest ceiling of the QB's, but his narrative is similar to Gabbert's in some respects (so with that story recently removed, I feel reserved about the pick). I'll say his athleticism looks more fluid than Gabbert's.

They do say GM's and their QB's are linked at the hip. Hope he beats Henne out week 1, but so did Gabbert.
helps that he isnt a panzy like gabby too... is thread for real... people really arent this stupid, right?.... just out of curiosity, how many of u who truly believe we should fire dave got butt hurt when we didnt bring on (he whos name i shall not say) a year ago...

if most of u are b hurt about not gettin tb or somthing, i get it, sux u didnt get ur guy... but if the cult crowd is back, u genius's can sit on it and spin.
Shad Kahn wants a winner, and he likes things big. London games, the largest screens on Earth, my bet is that he wanted a QB for his first pick. I could see him saying "You pick the guy Dave, but I want a QB for the number 3 pick". Regardless of the selection it would be the "news". 1st QB most likely to be picked in the draft, highest drafted QB in Jaguar history (big). And each one would have been a story. And each one would have similar responses seen tonight.

So it comes down to who. TB, JF or BB, any other name out there would have been a much bigger story. So assuming the above scenario is true, who would you have picked?

Quote:I am okay with the pick.

I think we dodged the bullet by not taking Manziel.

Now there is no freaking way I start him before the bye.

No way.

We have no OL, we have no WRs.  He could get ruined and killed.

The Jaguars must be disciplined and keep him on the bench until these areas are solidified.

I agree with that.

Here we were with a very high pick and a need at QB, but some huge holes on offense.   So, we take our guy and sit him until he is ready and the team is ready.

That takes some real discipline, but Caldwell and Bradley are sticking to the long term plan.  It's not about 2014, it's about 2015 and beyond.

There are a lot of great QBs that did not start right away.   Check the Hall of Fame and Pro Bowl rosters and you will find them.   There's no one way to do it, but there are an awful lot of cases where guys were forced out there before they were ready or the team around them was ready, forced out there by coaches who were on the hot seat and desperate to win.  And they failed.   So we just have to be patient and let Caldwell build this team.
Quote:Because the Browns or Raiders could have taken him.

Add the Bucs and Vikes to that list.

Just as long as 2015 isn't about 2016 and we'll be marginally better.  You can't always look at the future and forget the now.  We can't build the world's largest video boards every year.

Did they build that scoreboard so we can see what's on BB's clipboard?
We could not have traded with Buffalo and still got Bortles. Cleveland was going to take Bortles if we didn't. If Buffalo makes an offer to trade with us Dave would not have gotten Bortles.

Cleveland signed Vince Young and Tyler Thigpen in the offseason in a veiled attempt to disguise their intention of taking QB in the first round. When Bortles came off the board Cleveland immediately traded back knowing one of their backup plans for QB would be available. Hence they end up with Manziel at 22 .

Quote:You ever thought that maybe Cleveland traded down because we picked Blake?

Yeah...I don't know why people don't seem to understand this point.
I don't think trading back and getting Bortles was an option either, like I've said I'm fine with the pick. They evaluated him as the BEST player in the draft, lets wait and see how good they did evaluating. Personally I like the Kid I like what limited time I saw him play at UCF and expect big things from him.

Much like Gabbert, Bortles will make or break our GM.

That appears to be precisely what happened.  But, you're never going to convince the naysayers of this because that wouldn't support their agenda here.

If Bortles winds up fulfilling the expectations of Bradley and Caldwell, and he does indeed become the franchise guy, I wonder how many of the trade back crowd will be complaining?
Why are people still comparing Bortles to Gabbert? I don't get it. One can't play in the pocket and doesn't keep his eyes down field and the other excels in the pocket and always has his eyes down field. If you don't like the pick that's fine, but please stop.ckmparing him to Gabbert. Only shows your ignorance.
Watching Caldwell and Bradley in the post pick press conference was well worth the time.

When I listen to either guy speaking on matters involving the team, I get a real sense of competence, but there's more to it than just that.  These guys are both very driven, much as their boss is driven.

I don't get the sense that Caldwell doesn't know what he's doing.  Quite the opposite.  I think he goes to extreme measures to assure that major decisions like drafting a QB at #3 are the right one for this organization.  If you listen to what he said about the selection, he basically polled everyone in the coaching and scouting organization independently, never telling them what his thoughts were.  When Bortles was discussed, to a person, they unanimously said he should be the guy.

There are a lot of smart, experienced football people at the stadium.  They recognize to a person that their jobs depend on getting big moves like this right.  This wasn't some trivial decision that was made on the fly, and it's clear a lot of analysis and contemplation was involved.

As we've seen with past regimes, this level of collaboration was rarely employed.  Maybe it succeeds.  Maybe it doesn't.  But, knowing that they went the extra mile to make this decision tells me they recognize the gravity of the pick, and they're willing to stake their professional reputations on getting it right.  I like that.

We've got 10 picks left.  I would imagine the same level of attention is going to be applied at least to the picks we'll have tonight.  This is really an exciting time to be a Jag fan.

I'd rather complain. I've just been saving my ammo for later
