Quote:If Dave forces Bortles on any coach, than we aren't getting any of the names we like unless they LOVE Bortles. So I vehemently disagree.

If he hires a good coach and we pick up a decent QB through FA/trade/draft, the talent on this team (if its correctly coaches/takes the step a good coach should get out of it) we'll be right around .500 and on the up and up next year.

Bortles may be our starting QB next year to start, but I disagree that we won't have a very decent backup ready to come in if this stuff continues.

I don't think Dave is going to force Bortles on any coach.   Dave knows that if this team doesn't start winning now, he'll be next out the door.   He'll do everything he can to help this team win now.   That's why he'll pick the best HC he can get and the status of Bortles will not be a factor in making that choice.
Quote:1.  Short of hiring an offensive guy to develop Bortles, I still don't understand why so many are down on Mike Smith.

2.  SO you don't think it possible the Jaguars will go after a vet in free agency, or do you think they think none is really worth pursuing?  Assuming the Jaguars do as you suggest, why do you think that would be?  Is that a function of a weak at the top QB class, the team still preferring Bortles, or what?

3.  Eric Berry would be nice here.  Probably won't happen...but he would be nice here.

5.  This I would have MAJOR problems with.  If the team moved to a standard 4-3. the LBs will have cover responsibilities.  The last thing I would want is Fowler dropping into coverage.  I would rather bring in a conventional 4-3 OLB and let him play outside and keep Fowler down as a DE.  If the team were moving to a blitz happy 3-4, then I would be okay standing Fowler up.

6.  Not surprising, considering a presumed elimination of the Alualu/Odrick type position.

7.  That could happen.  It would be disappointing on many levels, but I could see that happening.

8.  Not adding a solid RT through free agency or before the 3rd round of the draft would be something of a disappointment.

9.  Run first team?  Not necessarily a bad thing-though I know you hate it.

10.  7-9 while disappointing in the big picture, that would represent tremendous progress for us.

11.  That would be bad on too many levels to ponder.

12.  If Bortles failure is sustained, I sincerely hope you are right about this.

1. Mike Smith is just a so-so head coach. He's being completely overrated. I don't see him as the guy to take us to the playoffs. More like a guy to get us to 8-8 or possibly 9-7 at best.

2. There is no QB's worth pursuing in free agency and this year's draft is completely void of QB talent at the top end. I believe there will be an infinitely better selection of QB's in the 2018 draft.

3. I don't think it will be Eric Berry that we sign. I believe it will be Tony Jefferson. He's a fantastic Strong Safety.

5. Fowler has proven he isn't a natural pass rusher. If he can't make it as a linebacker in a new 4-3 system, he'll probably be traded or let go eventually.

8. I'm not saying we wouldn't pursue a free agent RT, I just believe it won't work out. Personally I don't care how or when we get a RT, as long as they are better than Parnell.

9. I may not like it, but watching the run game completely falter now and seeing Bortles throw pick 6 after pick 6, is killing me. Anything is better than this. I'd prefer a pass happy offense, but we just don't have the personnel to do it.You have to go with a system that fits your personnel. Once we get a franchise QB, who knows?

11. If we have to trade up to finally get a franchise QB, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Whatever works.

1. We hire Mike Smith as head coach

2. Tom Coughlin becomes VP of Operations

3. We trade for Mike Glennon

4. Smith hires Mike Bajakian as OC

5. We suck again

Bonus Prediction.

6. It's all skepticism. Just enjoy the off season and the ride folks.

We don't need to trade for Glennon. He's an UFA and he'll cost around $15 million a season. If we sign him, we will suck.
1. Our new HC has previous head-coaching experience and has formerly been part of the Jags organization

2. We bring in a mid-level QB in free agency to compete (Brian Hoyer)

3. QB competition is declared open - Bortles wins but gets replaced at some point in the season.

4. We suck (death, taxes... becausejaguars)

If that all happens, we will suck.
This is the third thread I've seen someone say Joeckel won't be back.

He's a free agent who struggled mightily in his most recent game film.

Is trying to re-sign him even a real consideration?

I'd think not.
Offseason Prediction:

Even though we may be selecting #3 in the upcoming draft, I predict that I can still get my B.A.C. up to .017 by the time we make our selection.

I can't control any of the other moves so I'll defer to the Front Office.

1.  They don't just give out playoff appearances to coaches.  Yes, he reaped the benefits of Matt Ryan, but his successors also reaped the benefits of Matt Ryan and it did not translate into playoff berths or winning records.

5.  I think it's too soon to say Fowler won't develop into a pass rusher.  That said, even if he never does, that doesn't mean his best position would be as a LB in a conventional 4-3.  Bryce Paup epitomizes this.

8.  I agree with the closing part of this statement.  Parnell needs to be upgraded, IMO.
Quote:Then based on the conversation you guys are having, this begs the question why you think Jabril peppers "sucks?"

You are the first I've seen express a negative opinion about him.
He is not an NFL safety, he is not an NFL cornerback, he is an undersized LB you have to find a position for. Sorry, I'm not taking that guy third overall or even in the first round. People don't know how to evaluate NFL talent so they see him do things in college and automatically jump to the conclusion that he is one of the best NFL prospects. He is not. On top of not having a true position he doesn't even create turnovers. All he is is an athlete. Any team that takes him top 10 is dumb.

I figured that was part of the reason.
As much as I'd like to see Garroplo here, I don't think it'll happen. They're grooming the replacement for Brady and he's probably their best option.
Don't understand the obsession with Garroplo. They made Matt Cassel look good and hes complete garbage... Not to mention Garroplo is skinner then a tooth pick hes going to get hurt more often then Romo..

Garropolo is not skinny.

Teddy B is skinny.

Teddy B is skinny.

Alright fair enough, he just looks extremely skinny compared to other QB's on TV but I just looked up his height and weight and it is below average but it isn't that below average. That doesn't change the fact that Bill can make anyone look good in that system and have them actually be garbage. Once again example Matt Cassel.. Its the system.. It really isn't hard to throw to someone who is wide open because he got miss matched with a linebacker... which is what the Pats are known for
Mike Smith

Fournette or Cook

Romo or Jimmy

Bortles can't throw to wide open people. If Garrapolo can hit open targets that's already a big upgrade.
