According to Packer Report, Washington TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins clocked a 4.56 forty-yard dash during a Friday workout with the Jets.
We're always wary of misinformation this time of year, but Packer Report's source is ex-NFL scout Dave-Te' Thomas, who has a solid reputation as far as we can tell. Seferian-Jenkins weighed in at 6-foot-6, 271, making the 4.56 mind blowing even if you account for a potentially "fast track." ASJ added a ridiculous 37 1/2-inch vertical, per the report. The 2013 Mackey Award winner did not test at the Combine due to foot surgery to repair a stress fracture. We expect Seferian-Jenkins to be a second-round draft pick.
ASJ is a lot more athletic than what I thought, as a matter fact, he falls into the "freak athlete" category running a 4.56 40 and jumping 37 inches at 6'6 271 LBs, those numbers are ridiculous. There's a good chance the Pats take him in the first round, but if he somehow slips to us in the second, I wouldn’t mind the Jags pulling the trigger, he's a thicker version of Jimmy Graham.
I soured on him a bit after watching a few cut ups.
This write up wasn't to flattering as well.

Quote:When not in the red zone, Seferian-Jenkins is a very underwhelming receiver. He is a below average athlete, struggling to get a good release off the line when challenged and not showing much suddenness or explosion in any of his movements. He is really a lumbering mover, and I have a lot of questions if he'll ever be able to actually gain separation at the next level, as he is not good enough in and out of breaks to separate consistently. His lack of athleticism shows up after the catch as well, as he really can only rely on his size/strength for yards after the catch.
He sounds like a less athletic Mercedes without the above average blocking traits.
I'd rather draft Troy Niklas in the 2nd.

To be honest, I haven't had a chance to watch him myself, I just know he's been highly productive, and 6'6 270 LBS TE's with that kind of athleticism don't grow on trees. He could be a better pro than college player, he's incredibly athletic.
He should def. be considered depending who is still on the board. If Amaro, Ford, Van Noy, or Ward is on the board I would rather one of those.
It's funny how scouting reports barely even refer to blocking ability anymore. If he's not blocking anybody, he's not a TE, he's a WR. Despite what most fans think, blocking is still a main ingredient you want in a TE. Ideally, he can catch and block but if he's not a blocker, he's not a TE.

That's just where the game is at these days, if you have a freak at the TE position you'd prefer him to be dominating the middle of the field and stretching the seams vertically. You can coach up blocking technique, you can't coach god given athleticism.

haven't had a chance to watch TN, Mayock is high on him.

Whoa that's not true at all. Receiving skills are way way way more important than blocking for TEs now. ASJ is not a good blocker right now either, but his size and athleticism (even though he doesn't play at nearly the speed his drills would suggest) would indicate that if he is at all willing to put in the work he'll be good enough quick.
To answer the question though...I hate to say it but I agree with TMD. I like Niklas more than ASJ...although it really seems like Amaro might be there now and that would be a tough call between him and NIklas. I would take Amaro but if someone wants the better blocker in Niklas I wouldn't fault them.
But really I'd rather have Adams, Robinson, or Latimer if we're going passing threat.

So blocking isn't important for a TE? LOL. OK, gotcha. I really need to read up on the new NFL. I've been watching the NFL for longer than you've been alive but apparently you have all the answers.

Name more then one team that has had success with a TE known for his blocking over his catching skills. over the past 4 years
Do I think Lewis is good? Ehhh...he's serviceable. We have more glaring holes than TE.

I think we found the culprit. Mediocre is good enough for TE blocking nowadays. It's 10x more important to be a weapon in the passing game.
