Quote:He may well prove me wrong and be a special player.
But he won't really change perceptions until later in the season, when he proves himself exceptional against NFL competition.
He likely won't be able to do that until the guys around him prove up to the task.
That's too much to ask of ANY player....not singling out Manziel.
Whomever lines up at QB for the Jaguars to start the season will have the same uphill battle.
wow, well said, all of it. can't disagree. point taken
Quote:Man you love you some Johnny Football. I'm going to miss all you post about him when the Jags don't draft him and you are gone
i will live on in your Google history

Not so much google but your spirit will live on, on these boards lol
Draft Watkins, trade back up to get JFF

There is something about Manziel that strikes me wrong and I can't quite put my finger on it.
It's okay to be confident, but cocksure and dismissive can lead to a rude awakening.
As a lifelong Saint's and Jaguar ticket holder I can fully relate to negative media attention and it matters not one wit at all unless one is unsure of themselves.
I am not dissing any one posting, it is just not important what EsPIN thinks or says.
No decision concerning aquisition should be based on media perception.
Winning changes media perception.
Unlike Johnny Football, Drew Bree's can and still walks on water.
Time to get the yard work done and sweep out the leaf's.

Quote:Of course not.
Let's assume we draft Manziel and we hit on the pick.
Manziel will still need a rookie WR opposite Shorts and at least two rookie OLs to produce at an acceptable level for him to win one of those shootouts.
Manziel will operate behind a completely reconstructed OL, none of which has started an entire season in our blocking scheme, three of whom will likely have no experience whatsoever in the offense (unless you are penciling in Rackley at RG and Brewster at C on opening day, in which case we're still in trouble along the OL.
Manziel will not chenge the perception going into those early season games.
You're right. But I don't think any pick we make breathes life and hope into this franchise like Manziel would. (I don't expect Clowney to be on the board at #3.) I'm completely off the fence now. There are certainly other picks that would be surer at #3 that would help the team win. But Johnny Football as a Jag would bring Farve-like excitement to the field and to a longsuffering fan base.

I know what you are saying, to me he just comes off fake and not genuine. That said if the jags draft him I will route for him and defend him

We disagree.
Shad, Dave and Gus have brought and winning will bring excitement to the field and fanbase.
I am intrigued however, to see what Manziel does for the team that darfts him.
Should the Jaguars snag him later, I to will cheer, root and support him as a Jaguar.

Manziel is the ultimate boom or bust guy.
I think if he hits, he will hit big.
But if he busts, it'll be a Hindenburg level disaster.
As of now, I think he will bust.
But if we draft him, I will root like hell to be spectacularly wrong and hope he has a Hall of Fame career with us because if he hits, the impact on this franchise would be what you indicated.

If true, you're right. But i also think some of his 'negative' attributes have also been just as drummed up and hyped by the media as his good ones. I think it speaks volumes how highly all of his current and former teammates have spoken about him(Evans and Joekel come to mind).
This particular quote by Evans stuck out to me
Quote:“He’s far from a prima donna,” Evans told USA TODAY. “He likes to come in and work and get the job done just like everyone else. I’d go to war with him. I’d take him over anybody. He’s a great player.”
Whatever people think he is on the field or the lockerroom, he's apparently one hell of a teammate with a good head on his shoulders.
That said, your entirely right Slap that there is a fine line between confidence and cockiness. Those two things are worlds apart. I truly hope its the former.
I am no joke leaning to drafting Manziel at 3.
Just do it, ya know? It will create buzz immediately.
With how deep the draft is, we can still fill holes on the team even if he busts.

O......K......
I am going to get caught up in the KOOLAID.
Yes, If we got him, if he turned out to be all that and a bag of chips.
If he put HOF numbers the first year ( you know, what the Tebow fan boi's were espousing)
And verbally slapped Bayless into submission while sunning on Shads yacht with Whitney.
OK back to reality.

Speaking of confidence/cockiness, I just read a really great story.
Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor got to work out with Manziel Bridgewater, and Bortles at Tom Shaw's camp ...Ike says he'd take MAnziel without a doubt. wow!
Quote:Johnny Football went to Florida ... and left with the support of a whole bunch of NFL vets ...
We spoke to Pittsburgh Steelers superstar cornerback Ike Taylor ... who tells us he worked out with Manziel at Coach Tom Shaw's legendary performance camp at the Wide World of Sports Complex back in March.
Taylor says Manziel showed up to the camp with Jon Gruden to film a project for ESPN -- but when it came time for Johnny to hit the field, dude performed like a champ ... excelling in a variety of passing, timing and accuracy drills.
Taylor says there were a bunch of NFL players working out a the camp that day ... and they were all equally impressed.
"I like Johnny. He's like a rock star," Taylor says ... "Say what you want, the kid is good. You have to have confidence to play quarterback, and he definetly doesn't lack that."
Ike says he also worked out with Teddy Bridgewater, A.J McCarron and Blake Bortles at Coach Shaw's camp.
So, we had to ask ... which QB he would take with the #1 pick -- and Taylor said Manziel ... without a doubt.
"I know one thing for sure, he's gonna perform ... and he's gonna hate to lose."
