Brandon Thomas suffers torn ACL in training

Clemson OL Brandon Thomas suffered a torn ACL in training last week, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

This is just terrible news. Not only was Thomas a site favorite, his play as a versatile tackle or guard had been drawing rave reviews from evaluators. So much, in fact, that he could have squeezed into the first-round. Thomas has an athletic lower half, a powerful punch, and did well out on an island to mirror pass rushers. A team could get a very talented prospect at a reduced price.

Might be a good pick for us with one of our extra 3rd day picks.

Would actually be getting value from one of the picks gained from the Monroe trade.

My thoughts exactly.  If Dave can exhibit patience, he could now be a later round steal from where he was anticipated to go pre-injury.

i was thinking that also along with the CB Colvin who tour his at the senior bowl.

I like the idea of the lineman better than a CB that tore an ACL.... I'd think the lineman might be less affected than the CB might be, post injury. Just seems more risky for the CB given the CB relies on agility, change of direction and acceleration/ closing speed as well as any stress on the knee involved with leaping/ landing.

Hate to hear news like this.
Bummer. Hate to see this.

Very unfortunate news.

It seems like a much higher % of NFL players and prospects are suffering ACL injuries compared to 15 or more years ago.

I agree.

My hypothesis on it all is that players are overtraining - and getting their muscle development to a point that is too big/ strong for the frame's. Something has to give - and thats usually the ligaments.

Thats why you never saw as many of these type of injuries in the past.

Just my opinion.
If I were a potential 1st round pick, I'd be in my home with the doors locked.  Every step would be well calculated and the closest I'd get to tearing an ACL would be grabbing a beer from the fridge.

Sad to hear this, but then again, that's a bargain to be had with the injury.  Draft him on day 3 knowing he'll be out for a year, but that gives him a year to sit in on meetings, learn the process of being a pro, and getting conditioned for the next level.  No pressure.  No expectations.

Muscles have gotten stronger, while ligaments and tendons have not. Everything has it's breaking point.

It's part of the gamble of comes with being a professional athlete.
