8 Wounded, 4 Critically in Fort Hood Shooting; Gunman Dead

A shooting Wednesday afternoon at the Fort Hood Army post has left multiple people injured, and the shooter is believed to be dead, post officials said. The post remains on lockdown.

NBC News reported that eight people were injured, four of them critically, and that the person who died is believed to be the gunman. Officials are still searching and clearing buildings at the post, but a military official told NBC News that the deceased shooter appeared to be the only shooter.

Um, isn't this the second incident at Ft. Hood within the last few months?

What's going on over there?
Pretty sad when military members get gunned down on their own bases because they can't have guns to protect themselves. I wonder if they are allowed to have them when they go into battle.....

I made it off base like 5 mins before this happened. Thank God.

Holy crap. Sorry to hear something this close to you happened.

In regards to Dakota, what is the reasoning for not allowing guns?

Lunacy, I suspect.
Allowing service members to carry weapons around post is completely impractical and dangerous. Most people are under the impression that anyone wearing a uniform is a grizzled combat veteran and weapons expert. In truth only those with specialties in combat arms (a small percentage) would be qualified to do so, and even they would not want that responsibility. This is why we have military police in every service branch.

How is allowing service members carry guns around dangerous? You don't need to be a grizzled combat veteran to carry arms. Maybe I'm missing something in your post.

Wouldn't want that responsibility?  Tell that to the people who were shot and had no way of defending themselves.  I bet you they wish they were carrying.

Absolutely ridiculous. The response is to an active shooter on bases that are "gun free" is to remain where you are and seek cover. Quite possibly the dumbest thing to due with that threat. That is the PC environment being created today to appease some. You have a force on base trained to use guns, but they won't let them carry. Makes sense. Take guns away from everyone, no one will have them and all will be safe. Makes sense.....Just like drugs, make them illegal and no one can get them !!! That works too right?

99.9% of all the US Military bases who are "gun free" are totally defenseless to attacks like this. Fort Hood twice, and the Washington Navy Yard and numerous others. Unreal. Some just don't get it.

Political correctness.

Military police are reactionary, not proactive in situations like this.

It's not dangerous at all. There is a large enough percentage trained to shoot guns on base that the base would be a safer place with them.
So who is to be allowed the privilege of carrying weapons around on base? Everyone?
I'm glad we can't carry weapons on post. More stuff like this would happen. There are too many crazy people in the Army. It just sickens me that a soldier would do this to other soldiers. We shouldn't have to worry about being slain on our own soil, on our own military installations. The person who did this was a coward. I pray for the families of the people who lost their lives.

I don't want this conversation to get too heated, but I just wanted to state that I know where you're coming from man. Stay safe out there everyone.

Regardless if you are allowed to have weapons or not, the person who is doing this crazy stuff doesn't care.  The law is meant to protect, but what it intends to do and what it actually does is two different thing.  If someone is crazy enough to shoot someone then they already don't care about the laws.  As I said earlier, I bet the people who were being shot at wished they did have a weapon to protect themselves.

Anyways, sorry about the situation.  Sad day.
