Quote:I got to thinking about this. Currently the team has 11 picks. Barring any trades that change that number, that's 11 rookies coming in as of May. Ideally, it would be great if all 11 came in and became starters and played at a high level. I think that's a little unrealistic though. But what is realistic? The more rookies that immediately start would either signal a weak roster or a very good and lucky GM. Fewer players would obviously mean the opposite. So that said, what is the number that would be nice to see come September?

I think I put it at 5, personally. The top 3 picks, and hopefully a couple mid rounders at positions of need.

Is it realistic to get a starter at guard in the fourth or fifth?

A WR in the fourth that would start?

A LB around that area?

Just something to kick around that doesn't revolve around the names so much as the overall roster and finding fits throughout the draft.
Good topic.

I had been thinking about this as well.

I have one clarifying question:  what time frame are we talking about when the rookies become starters?

Are we talking they are starters the second they get drafted?  Are we talking opening day starters?  Are we talking not opening day starters but who become starters later in their rookie seasons, or starters by the second year?

If we are talking opening day starters, if the team drafts well, I could see 4-5 immediate opening day rookie starters at OLB, G, C, maybe a WR, maybe a DE (if Clowney), and maybe a QB (if Bridgewater).

If we include guys who initially ride the pines at the start of the year but find their way into the lineup later, I could bump that number up by one or two (maybe a DT, another OLB, a CB, or a QB [Bortles, McCarron, Mettenberger)).

If we are including guys who become starters by the second season, I could bump that up another 2-3 (QB-if Bortles, et al, TE, MLB)
I believe we may see up to 5-6 starters. 2 O-line, QB, maybe TE, LB (have a feeling Russell Allen may be traded for a pick), WR, and also possible injuries. Caldwell is going to bring in some studs.

Well a lot depends on position and extra picks added. If Jaguars were to trade down from 3rd overall pick and acquire another 2nd or 3rd rd pick I would think the first both 2nd round picks and 3rd would start but if Jaguars draft a Qb like Jimmy Garropolo in 2nd or 3rd rd he probably not starting day 1. Olb,G and Wr if Blackmon isn't available could surrently start day 1. Go Jaguars!
If the draft goes like I think it will I think the picks from round 1 and 2 will start.

And I'm on the fence about round 3.

No one else, imo.

Most starters crom from the first 4 rounds and we have 3  4th rounders and 1 pick in each of the first 3 rounds making for 7 players possible so i'll use that idea and only count from rounds 1-4.

Option A (Flashy route) : 1st QB Bridgewater/Manziel/Bortles , 2nd DE best remaining 4-3 pass rusher , 3rd best remaining RB , 4th LB/CB/WR. Out of this route id say 4 starters is likely. The QB , DE ,  RB are all starters with the CB and LB having a chance. Gerhart doesnt impress me much and i feel a solid rookie could beat him. Same for us bringing in Vet DEs and the OLB and CB spots are far from locked down.

Option B (Economy route) : 1st DE Khalil Mack , 2nd Interior O-lineman , 3rd best remaining QB , 4th DT/TE/WR. From this you could only really expect the 1st 2 picks as surefire starters as any QB picked is likely to sit behind Henne and we already have a solid rotation at DT, a viable started in Marcedes Lewis at TE and any WR will be behind Blackmon,Shorts,Ace and even Mike Brown.

THis is one year i feel we should take the flashy route.
None of those QBs should be drafted 3 overall in this draft if you go by best available player in the draft.

You are basically saying need drafting instead of flashy route.

You want to make Mack a DE instead of LB have him play the Leo role?  I could see that happening so economy route isnt too bad..

I would rather see us draft Clowney as the leo at #3 overall (if for some reason he falls to 3 because I dont see Dave trading up, in fact all signs point to him trading down)..

2nd round if you are needs drafting depending on what happens with your 1st round pick, but I could see an Interior OLineman especially if they pay Mack big money $$$ at center.

3rd round would have to be a QB, because no fan is going to put up with Chad Henne for an entire season again, might even draft in the 2nd round if a guy like Bortles remains on the board.

4th round I am going to shock people and say WR, but might not shock too many as Ace was productive but DR struggled.

5th round to 7th will be guys they hope will make the starting team / depth.
