Clowney is the safest pick in the draft based on the fact that there's nothing glaring about him physically. The only way he can fail is if he wants to fail and the right person at the right time makes all the difference.
Gus Bradley is that right person.
Quote:I think the answer to your questiion depends on the state of a club. Lets use the 49rs for example, they are built to be contenders every year right now so if im their GM I take the special player. The safe guy might be solid, giving you a starter with decent production. Now getting a special player can make others around you better. A guy like Clowney can draw more attention and allow the other side to produce more. Safe wouldnt allow that...
For the Jags taking the Special player is a huge gamble because its really boom or bust. Making the wrong choice could potentially set us back years (see Gabbert). On the flip side taking a safe player may just be another guy. Lets call Teddy the safe guy because he does most things good but isnt an elte QB...SO if Teddy turns out to be a Qb that ranks somewhere between 15-20 what have we really done? Did playing safe help us out at all?
This year we should take the Boom or bust guy, Clowney, Watkins or Manziel...Any of those guys would give us a superstar worth giving extra attention and possibly making others better. I have my concerns with Manziel but I think he would make our offense interesting.
For the OP that said he read that Clowney took plays off and he didnt work hard in his senior year...A, he isnt a senior. B. He still comes off as a very immature kid. C He watched one of his best friends (Marcus Lattimore) get his leg destroyed the prior year and lose millions of dollars. He was certainly a top 15 pick and when his leg was destroyed his career was almost over..Its my opinion that Clowney played scared, that he was scared to get hurt. He didnt go hard, because Im sure many Olinemen chopped his legs from under him on a regular basis. He shouldnt have plyed last year if this was the case. He should of pulled out of school, just sat and trained if he was so scared. While he would have taken heat for not playing, at least it would make more sense than going at 50% and most guys would have respected him for being honest.
I think Clowney has the potential to be one of the scariest players in the league ever, a better version of Peppers. Clowney reminds me of Lawrence Taylor, thats the highest praise a defender in the front 7 could get. IF Clowney matures and focuses on the game, he could have a similar impact. IF he doesnt mature, we will see Jamarcus Russell of the Defense.
Give me Clowney, Watkins and Manziel in that order
I agree with what you posted but i would have it Watkins, Manziel, Clowney. But with Watkins being the safe player i would take the next BAP in my special category and get Manziel and hope that clowney doesn't turn into peppers or LT lol. It's a big toss up but opinions will be heard all month.
Quote:Well who would you choose TMD, one of the safe selections or one of the special players at #3
Bridgewater
Quote:Bridgewater
I want Johnny but i wouldn't debate with TB at #3 on a bad day.
I take the "special" player. Every time. Did Gene Smith save his job with the "base hit" strategy?
Thats different, Gene smith was bunting in Woofle ball...
Quote:Thats different, Gene smith was bunting in Woofle ball...
Yep, he woofed on some stuff, for real. But his ultimate demise may have been his team building strategy. If he took his same evaluations, and applied a completely different strategy to building a roster and a coaching staff, results could have been night and day.
You take the Special Player. That's what makes your team special. Nobody ever got anywhere by playing it "Safe".
Bridgewater / Bortles = guys who play football
Manziel = Football player
Clowney eh? What did the Colts do with Mathis and Freeney on the roster AFTER Manning went down...only so much a defensive stud can do if your offense BLOWS

That's my biggest fear with getting one of the top Defensive players. Defense wins championships by stopping the other team from scoring points but Offensive helps the defense by allowing them to stay off the field longer and rest. So how is going 3 and out again and again going to help us whether we get clowney or mack? Hopefully some posters have alot of faith in the second and 3rd round QB's to carry this team to a 8 and 8 or better. If so, how would we get that franchise QB next year?
Quote:special: Clown, Manziel, Robinson,
safe: Gilbert, Matthews, Bridgewater
So Mack will be a bust for playing lesser teams, yet Bridgewater is safe?
Now as far as special or safe potential-
special- Manziel (despite big pro day hype, still not 100% on board. But maybe), Watkins, Clowney, Mack
safe- Bortles, Bridgewater (above was not a shot at Bridgewater, but at the poster), Matthews
By saying safe, Im not sure id take "safe" at #3

That's what im saying. Every player has a chance to prove themselves once their drafted. I won't deny TB, Mack, Clowney, Bortles, Watkins, nor Manziel. I just feel that the player with that offensive spark is JFF and i value that over TB and Bortles sitting a year if JFF would be doing the same for the JAGS. I've already stated how i feel about Defense but no matter what the pick i want an offensive player at #3

Thats where im torn with the 3 qb's, all of them have star potential but to take one at #3 is a big question mark.

Yea, i also question a QB; but i dont see a RB with a higher grade than the QB's in the top 10, and i don't want a WR with Henne at 3, and i've said my piece about Defense. I've said before, and still feel that unless we plan on either trading up next year for the top QB or tanking the season then taking the best QB is what we should do. Whether thats who i want or not i think that's the right decision. We can trade back if need be or not but i want a QB in the 1st. We have to try and build this team and building up the WR core is not how we improve our offense and it definitely isn't by adding a defensive player.
If I were the GM I would take the special guy. You can't teach certain things.
The problem is finding guys with special talent who also love football. And by love, I mean that football is probably the most important thing in their life. They fully dedicate themselves to their craft, and don't just rely on talent/natural ability.
I see the love of Football in Manziel so I would probably take him if I was going QB, but I am happy I am not the GM this year.

Yea, im passionate about Football and i see that passion in JFF but i don't want to be a groupie. TB or Bortles have a chance to become better pro's because no one is guaranteed and a GM has to make that call. Since i'm not an NFL talent evaluator, I'll leave that final QB decision on DC.
Gimme the guy with the combination of highest floor and highest ceiling.
High floor, high ceiling, special player, "safe"...
Clowney covers them all, and no one else does.

Gene's idea of a "safe" player was a guy who would be guaranteed to produce...at a level two rounds below where he was drafted. But he'd be productive!

I see it this way. If the draft goes how i would like or not, i won't be mad. Clowney does cover them in my mind to a degree but i'll be a JAGS fan regardless and im just ready for the draft and next season. Best stadium 2014-15 also!
