Why don't they just raise the crossbar?? I mean, they already decided to raise the uprights by 5 feet...wouldn't it make sense to raise the crossbar? Make it to a height that the players couldn't reach.

But, it would hurt for longer field goals. The league wants the drama.
I think telling the players they'll be penalized will pretty much take care of this without any further changes to the goal posts.
I did hear an interesting point about the reasoning behind this yesterday. There's a liability issue here with them adding 5 feet to the posts. If the goal posts become unstable or out of alignment, that extra 5 feet makes a big difference in the stability of the structure.
