Jim Kelly in NYC to undergo surgery for cancer recurrence

Jim Kelly and his family are in New York City as the Hall of Fame quarterback is preparing to undergo surgery for his cancer recurrence.

Kelly is said to be weak and “in bad shape.” He’s been in and out of hospitals for the past 10 days, but News 4 has learned that Kelly is scheduled to have surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan on Thursday because doctors wanted to see him immediately.

Even though I dreaded playing the Kelly-led Bills back when I was a Miami fan, my best wishes, thoughts, and prayers go out to Kelly and his family. I know that this is a tough challenge to go through, and I hope that they find some relief.

Good luck Jim!

Every time I read about Kelly the news seems to be worse.

Some of my earliest memories of pro football are of watching Kelly and the K-Gun Bills. He was a great QB. And he seems to be a pretty good guy that has dealt with some bad breaks in life.

The news definitely is not good. Kelly was always one of my favorite players to watch. May he and his family be in our thoughts.
It's a shame to hear that he's in such bad shape. I know someone who dealt with a similar diagnosis, and the second time around was far more aggressive, and he didn't win the battle.

Thoughts and prayers to Kelly and his family. Hopefully they're able to get this.

Everyday it seems like there's worse news about Jim Kelly's health each day. His surgery was postponed for the time being because he's too weak to even have surgery tomorrow. My thoughts and prayers remain with Jim Kelly and his family. A miracle appears to be needed for Jim Kelly to recover to the point that he can live a normal life for a long time.

Between the passing of Ralph Wilson Jr. and the declining health of Jim Kelly, these are very difficult times for Buffalo and Bills fans everywhere. I hope much better times are ahead.

I wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy.

This is really sad-to say nothing of the thousands/millions dealing with cancer we never hear about.

I hope Kelly pulls through this okay.

The pictures of him with his daughter are just so heart wrenching. Best of luck to him I hope he pulls through.

Quote:Apparently, the doctors decided surgery wasn't the best course of action at this time. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. It could mean the cancer has spread to the point where it's not going to make a huge difference. But, the silver lining is that they say the cancer is treatable, and possibly even curable.

The part of the situation that is as concerning as anything is apparently the cancer that Jim Kelly has is a very aggressive cancer. While the medical team at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan is of top of the line caliber, it truly will take a miracle for Jim Kelly to be cured.

Agreed. The type of cancer he's dealing with is a concern. But, even aggressive forms of cancer can be treated. I have a good friend who was given a terminal diagnosis with stage IV colon cancer about 6 months ago. It was an aggressive form of cancer she was dealing with as well. She and her husband decided that the only approach to dealing with aggressive cancer is even more aggressive treatment. She had two tumors when the treatment started. She now has one, and the other is significantly diminished in size to where she may actually have a surgical option where that wasn't the case a few months ago. The cancer had metastasized to her liver and lungs, but all of that has been wiped out with the treatments.

It sounds like the cancer spreading is probably the primary reason why the surgery was put off. Hopefully the treatment he receives allows him to continue this fight, or to even win it all together. It's daunting, but he's a relatively young guy. Hopefully they can beat this thing.

What you mentioned sounds encouraging. I'm very glad that your friend has made considerable progress in the battle against Stage IV Colon Cancer. Hopefully, each day will bring her and Jim Kelly closer to a recovery in their respective battles. As long as there's life, there's hope.
