The "Justin Blackmon insurance signing"  isn't going to be an overpriced FA.  It'll be a rookie.  There are a half dozen that fit the bill - and a few of them will be there in the 3rd or 4th.
Precisely.  They also have more upside than free agent that's out there.  Pretty easy decision.
Quote:Same here.

We'll see what Jerry can do with him. Jim Hostler wasn't able to develop Doss or Torrey Smith for that matter. Smith was a better prospect than Cecil Shorts by a comfortable margin IMO. Sullivan has help Shorts become the better pro.
Big bodied receiver who can be an asset in the return game.  Not a bad signing for a team WR deficient.  Other than Marcedes, we really don't have any big targets.

My thoughts are that Doss will be looked at as an ST player. Unless he's an Diamond in the Ruff I don't see him surplanting the WRs on the existing roster. True Competioion to bring out the best in whom we already have...

As I expect of his role w/the Jaguars...

Quote:Just because you throw money at a guy like James Jones doesn't make him a stud receiver. There are going to be really good WRs that we can draft in the first three rounds that are way better than anything out in the FA pool. I'm confused why some people aren't seeing that.
Once again, yes you can draft a really good receiver in this year's draft, BUT IF YOU DON'T, YOURE STUCK WITH CRAP. We have 3 picks in the top 3 rounds and needs at QB, C, G, LEO as well. So it's not farfetched to think that receiver may not be addressed until later in the draft. Then you'll have someone on the roster to compete with those late round picks for a roster spot.

I said nothing about throwing money at James Jones or anyone else. Didn't even mention James Jones and the assumption is Doss got a small contract.

Relax Brooklyn. It will be ok.

We can't fill every hole on this team anyway.  We are still rebuilding.

Who should we get then that would really be worth the money and would improve this team?
I retract my earlier comments....

Interesting thing about him is he is only 24....and his stats have been on an ascending curve the past 2 years.

While I don't expect much, this wasn't a bad inexpensive shot in the dark to take.

His timed speed is not that fast so he must be pretty quick-twitch to garner the averages he does per catch and per return.

Wait til Jerry Sullivan gets ahold of him. This could get interesting.

True.

Put it this way, I like this signing a lot more than had we signed Emmanuel Sanders. I don't see Sanders ever becoming more than he is right now. (even if he "compiles" a lot of numbers in Denver, ala Eric Decker) Doss, however, with his younger age and bigger frame as well as better average per catch/ avg per return/ which suggests better natural playmaker,....I think Sullivan might just be able to do something here. Now, again, not expecting the moon, but this was a good, cheap gamble to take. If it don't work out, no big loss.

I doubt we signed him without Sullivan's opinion.  If he says he is a promising young receiver he probably is.

Quote:......Not a bad #5, and a special teams contributor. If you take a better WR in the draft and Doss gets beat out for the last WR spot, what's the harm?

Or if a WR gets injured, or ...if JB does in fact, not return to the league (odds are to me he won't be ).

We should sign a guy like Doss and let him compete for a backup/special teams spot and see how the draft shakes out. It is almost never worth it to spend money on a starting receiver in FA. You go for an unproven but ascending player and see if he works out. He may end up being quality depth, he may really shine and work his way into a significant role, he may be garbage that you dump, but no matter the outcome you dont pay much for it. This is what Doss is.

what's most impressive is the 6 returns he had for 20+ yards on 24 returns. That means 1/4 of the time he touches the ball (not counting fair catches) he's going to set you up with really good field position.
A couple of interesting comments from someone who claims to be edumacated on this stuff.

This is by far the worst signing by Caldwell yet.

I don’t care if we got him for the price of a skittles bag its too much. He is the worst WR I have ever scouted. He can’t run clean routes his hands are very bad. I dont know what kinda film Caldwell must have seen to sign this guy but come on man! The practice reps can be used on someone much better, basically anyone else….. Didn’t we just draft Ace/Robinson to be our punt returner/kick returner. Complete waist of money, time, coaching and a camp roster spot. But I hope he proves me wrong.

I coach for the Baltimore Mariners we are an arena football team.

We often scout players on the Ravens so after they are cut we know who there are and if we should go after them or not.

Lets just say Doss is a not!

maybe that's why he's coaching arena ball?

Let's hope for that and then some...

I trust Caldwell and Sullivan more than some arena football scout. Doss is still young and has a lot of upside. No harm in bringing him in at all. We need a big body receiver anyway.
