True...still I wouldn't be surprised, especially if we draft another DE in May, that we deal someone for a 2015 draft choice before the final 53.
Don't take issue with the signing I mean we got the Cap Space for sure and I like the idea of a rotation but I think its obvious that one of Babin/Branch will be cut or traded if we draft any DE in the draft.

I do like the idea of flexibility for the draft though...

Branch would have some trade value, especially since he showed an increase in QB sacks in 2013....Might be able to squeeze a 2015 4th rounder from another team if dealt. 3rd rounder would probably be pushing it.

But this is all speculation anyway. They might have no intentions of trading/ releasing anyone, for all we know.
Branch isn't going anywhere, an old guy will get axed 1st if necessary.

Quote:Yes. I don't have a problem with it. (in the post you are responding to I said I don't understand this move (now). Remember, that was also said before the Clemons signing....I don't understand how we fit all these DL into the rotation. Someone's not making the cut, or will be traded.....especially if they draft another DE high.

Fair. I don't think it's a bad thing. Light a fire under some butts.

That's how i see this move.
Babin was probably the best LEO left on the market. Not bad to have some decent players in rotation while we try to find our own young guys.

Depends on how the draft falls but do you cut an "old guy" and get nothing or trade Branch for "something" if there impact is seen to be the same.

I'd turn the older player loose, especially if Branch is the younger player in your scenario. The team can still get three seasons out of Branch if they exercise the fifth year option on his contract that I think is in there. I'd rather have Branch for three years than an older guy that might be around for two.
Many didnt like Babin because of a few stupid penalties. I saw it as aggressive. Yes I wasnt happy with a dumb penalty either, but I liked an aggressive, play till to whistle, hard nosed player. Im glad they brought him back.

It does hint at the draft a bit. After all tye Clowney talk, maybe its back to QB talk.

I love how the D is taking shape. Now a shut down D is fine, but a shut out offense defeats the purpose. But if this isnt Seattle Part Deux I dont know what is. Power D, Power Running game, suitable WRs and the million dollar ?  QB???

If they model themselves as their North Western counterparts, do they look at Manzeil? Or go Mack and McCarron, Mettenberger?

Dammit...whens the draft?

With this teams luck with pass rushers, if you find a young one, you are hanging on to him.
Didn't expect this. I cool with it tho. You can never have enough pass rushers. Heck sign some more. Teddy B here we come.
In a recent Caldwell slideshow at the stadium on some of the good things from last year from a personnel standpoint, he highlighted both La'Roy Reynolds and Abry Jones as standout undrafted free agents and contributors moving forward. I don't see Dave cutting or trading Jones, as a couple people suggested earlier in this thread. I get the sense that he would move Alualu out before Jones.

The return of Babin, along with the acquisition of Clemons, puts pressure on Branch. I am not sure Branch has the skill set to be a true Leo in this scheme. He seems more fitted to a traditional 4-3 DE role. I think Branch could be on the block, if they take another Leo type in the draft.

On a side note, Watson is a SAM with pass rush skills, that will compete with Allen and Reynolds for the starting role. He may also fill an attacking role in lightning packages.
I think this was insurance just in case we dont get Clowney.  If we get Clowney I think Babin gets released.

I was hoping that he'd resign even though he committed many penalties...

Welcome Back Babin...

Agreed...

The resigning of Babin ensures us that the rotation will be in Full Effect including players that are worthy...

Quote:We literally have no more room to draft a DE....if we do, as the other guy said, someone is going, either cut or trade.

Its possible that Branch could be that guy since he's a previous regime guy.

Are we ramping up to draft the Best LB/Pass Rusher within the 2014 NFL draft?

Enquiring Minds...

LOL, nice!

Speaking of which, where is that idiot that was spewing all that nonsense. I see he's strangely absent from the conversation.
