Quote:The Packers and cornerback Sam Shields have reached a four-year, $39 million contract, a league source told PFT’s Mike Florio on Saturday.

Shields will receive a $12.5 million signing bonus, and his 2014 compensation is $15 million. By the second season, Shields is slated to have made $21 million, and the deal is worth $30 million through 2016.

The 26-year-old Shields recorded 61 tackles, defended 16 passes and intercepted four passes in 2013.

See....this is what I am talking about.....

horrible deal. Overpaid.

He's not elite, yet is being paid that way.

that is overpaid
Gonna be par for the course though folks. Salary cap is rising a lot over the next few years as the new TV contract revenue is being worked in and the contracts are going to be reflecting that starting this year. Gonna have to readjust what we think is a good value contract.

It's the main reason I won't blink an eye when Michael Johnson easily breaks 10 mil AAV and could push to top 12 mil even I think.

Well blame Grimes. His contract set the CB market.
That's a lot of money for just a "good" player. Still, congrats to Shields, hope he saves it. Would hate to see another former NFL player broke after a few years into retirement

He's a good 26-year-old CB. Naturally, he's going to want more money than Brent Grimes, a good 30-year-old CB, got in his 4-year, $32M deal.

This is a big part of why I'm not a fan of bidding on the front-line cornerbacks this year. They're all going to be very expensive thanks to the Grimes deal, and most of them have significant red flags. It's the younger, second-tier guys that are where I'd like to see us throw some money around.

I think we all know players are gonna get overpaid, it happens every year its nothing new.  I can see Johnson getting 10 mil a year but I wouldnt want him for that.
With Shields at 10 mil a year, Sherman will prob. want 50 mil a year lol.

Revis signed a 6-year, $96M contract with the Bucs last year. $3M/yr was in workout and roster bonuses, and $13M/yr in salary. No guaranteed money, which is why the Bucs could conceivably trade him at any time. Brandon Carr signed a 5-year, $50M contract with the Cowboys in 2012 with $25M of it guaranteed.

I don't think Sherman's demands will be nearly as high as Revis', but I don't think they'll be close to Carr's, either. When the time comes, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with a 5-year, $75M contract with $30-35M guaranteed.

I think he will want to be the highest paid corner in the league, we shall see.  I also think Earl Thomas will want to be the highest paid safety in the league.

I agree he'll want to be the highest-paid, but the Seahawks will rightly point out to him that Revis' deal (which Revis will almost certainly not still be working under when Sherman can renegotiate) contained no guaranteed money whatsoever. That changes the face of the deal. If guaranteed money had been involved, I'd venture a guess that it would have been more of a 5-year, $60M deal with $30M guaranteed.

Earl Thomas will be expensive when the time comes. Very expensive. I think that whatever contract Byrd ends up with will set the floor for him.

I know you dont like the Bryant signing but I think if he waited it out till Tues. that he would of gotten a bigger contract at least a couple more mil. from Den. or NE.  He must really like Gus and the direction of this organization.  I just hope we get a couple of starters on the oline in free agency and I will be happy.

I posted in the Bryant signing thread in the Jaguars subforum. I'm surprised we got him as cheap as we did, honestly, and for what we paid, we could have done a lot worse. I was figuring that 3-4 teams would drive up the bidding, and we'd end up sinking $8M a year into a 30-year-old defensive end who can't rush the passer. We ended up getting him for half that, which leaves us plenty of room to keep Alualu, draft a guy early in 2015/2016 as his successor, or both. Bryant's not a long-term fix, and his contract reflects that. He's a good addition to the defense, and it was some excellent negotiation on the part of David Caldwell to get him at that price.

Edit: And I'm right there with you on the OL. I really, really hope we come away with Asamoah, Schwartz or both. Center really scares me. The free agent class is loaded with "just a guy" types, which means that getting a decent one will cost far more than it should, and the draft class is weak at center too. Hope you like Brewster and McClendon, because I'm afraid we'll be seeing a lot of them

Not only is the cap going up, but with all money saved from rookie contracts this is becoming the norm. Still would like to avoid the secondary in FA though if it shakes out like this. Better to fill those holes in the draft. Though maybe Browner can be had for a good price due to suspension issues...
Edit: accidental duplicate
if Calwell wants Teddy or Manziel I hope we put in a big play for Bennett
I'm torn on Bennett. He's not a true LEO, but he's not a true five-tech either. If anything, I think that Bryant's addition makes it less likely that we go after Bennett hard. I still think he'd be an upgrade, but I think we'd end up spending $8M/yr or more on a guy who ends up being rotational instead of a starter.

I'm liking Everson Griffen more and more after the Bryant signing, with Robert Ayers as my "off-the-radar" guy. Living in Denver, I got to see plenty of him on TV last year, and even though he wasn't piling up sacks, he had a knack for knifing his way into the backfield. I think he could be an effective LEO in Bradley's scheme, and he'd probably come at a much lower price than Bennett or Griffen will.

Yeah I agree in Bennett not a true leo but the guy can wreck some havoc in the backfield.
