Gus likes competitors and Bortles isn't afraid of the competition. Bridgewater and Manziel only have themselves to blame.
Quote:Bortles also continues to talk about his decision to throw at the Scouting Combine — and the decision of other quarterbacks not to throw.
“I don’t really understand why guys don’t throw,” Bortles said. “Every single quarterback that throws is kind of faced with a little adversity. Nobody knows those receivers. The guys are going to run at different speeds. They’re going to come out of cuts at different angles. They’re going to break routes off early and all that kind of stuff. But everybody has to deal with it. It’s a level playing field from a quarterback perspective. So I don’t really understand why guys don’t throw.”

Not our pick at #3

I know. I'm just messing with the Bridgewater brigade and the Manzielites.

But it is an indicator of interest to say the least.

And it certainly doesn't have to do with if someone chose not to throw at the combine.

Not necessarily. You should read this article. Here's a tidbit.
Quote:In the last two weeks leading up to the draft many in the media felt that it was a lock we were going to take a high-profile player we brought in for a visit. On draft day that year, a team behind us traded up to get in front of us before selecting the same player linked to us by media analysts. We just quietly smiled as a different player—the one we had for months actually wanted—was still there when we made the pick.

With the amount of holes the Jaguars have, smoke and mirrors is in effect by virtue of having a lackluster roster.

I never thought about it like that, but in a way it is certainly working to our advantage.

Bortles is a politician. He talks a lot about how he will never embarrass a franchise with anything he does off the field (which is a shot at Manziel), and he talks about how he doesn't understand why the other guys were afraid to compete at the Combine. He keeps taking these subtle digs at the other QBs.

"Durrrr.. is his girlfriend coming?"

I could see Bortles on the radar if we slide back. Based on the eyeball test alone, he looks the most like a prototypical NFL QB.

The article made a very good point, and that is, it isn't all just lying and hoping other GMs believe your lies. You have to tell the truth often enough that people will not know when you're lying.
Smart GMs don't just lie all the time. They have to use their lies judiciously.
So when we read "Team A is interested in player x..." it may actually be true.

I don't want Bortles. I have him as my fourth QB based on games that I've watched of him. He has the size, yes, but what else? The last time we drafted a QB based on size alone, we got Gabbert.
Trust me, I don't have QB fear, I would rather take a guy who has a legitimate strength to his game. I don't feel like Bortles has it.

He's not afraid of contact either.

He had a better college career but not better tools, except maybe athleticism. Gabbert has a massive arm he just never uses it. Bortles has above average arm strength t best from what I've seen of him.

Due diligence. They'll bring several people in for talks.
