Babin was our best DE. He was also a good role model for the team. He always gave 100%, and didn't pack it in like many older players would have done on an 0-8 team (e.g Douglas, Hugh).

OTOH, Uche just wasn't good last season.

Quote:id rather cut Babin and sign Bennett for 9 mil a year

9 million a year is a pretty steep price to pay. I doubt Caldwell forks over that much cash for any player, especially when you consider the years/guaranteed money that are likely going to be required to sign Bennett. Also it's pretty ironic that people hate on Babin's performance but praise what Bennett did.

Player A: 40 tackles 7.5 Sacks 3 FF

Player B: 31 tackles 8.5 sacks 4 FF

You say 6 mil a year is too much for Babin, but would be willing to pay Bennett 3 million more annually for basically the same production. Granted, Bennett is 5 years younger, but still.

What's the rush to do so? If they cut him and then aren't able to land a competent replacement in FA or the draft, they're screwed. Sit on his rights until you're convinced you don't need him anymore.

1. Babin said he would restructure 2. We can afford both EASILY even if he doesn't 3. Pass rush is important, you want to stack them if you can.

Judging a player ability just by stats, and especially those stats (where are the hurries, tackles for loss, QB hits ???) is laughable.

Babin TFL 10, QB hurries 9

Bennet TFL 9, QB hurries 8

You're making stats up.
I thought he was willing to take a pay cut to stay here.

Quote:Our cap isn't an issue - yet we cut Uche.. who at least is a serviceable guard.

What you just said could have been said about Uche as well.  So something is different in this instant.  I think it's the roster bonus thing that D6 mentioned.

Just an idea, it could be Caldwell's attempt to assure any FA guard he pursues will be a starter. Nothing to support it but who knows?

Could be possible

Injuries, cost, and his inability to zone block made him a bad fit, that's all it is. They're going to replace the interior offensive line, just like they did in the defensive backfield last year.

Babin stays because he doesn't get hurt and gives good production. His willingness to take a pay cut would just be a plus, not the whole reason.

Jason has publicly stated that he wants to stay and will restructure.

Based on what happens in FA and the deal, he stays.

We could land and draft a combination of DE,DT that make Babin surplus.

That remains to be seen and then there is camp

We don't know the full story behind Uche, I wish him well and hopes he signs soon.

HeadSlap

D6 was right on. The big difference is that Uche was due a big roster bonus, while Babin is not due a roster bonus. With the current high level of cap room, there is no reason to release Babin at this time. Babin is scheduled to make $6m in base salary, and has no unamortized signing bonus (dead money) that would sometimes come into play in the timing of a player's release.

Me too....

What happened with that?

I don't want Babin to return at his present salary, but if he would restructure like he claimed to be open to doing previously, I'd be fine with him returning.

Sounds reasonable.
Why would we get rid of a guy that provides what we lack most after qb play?

I think the difference is that we can upgrade over Uche with the same amount of money spent. I don't think we'll get more than 7.5 sacks spending babins salary on a different FA.

Actually those stats are spot on.
Jason Babin will work out a new deal with the Jaguars. The only reason some want him cut is to eliminate a quality pass rusher in favor of Derrick Harvey 2.0.

Our defense will get better on the edge rushing stuff if we have guys like Ra'Shede Hageman and Kelcy Quarles crushing the pocket back to the quarterback's feet. Eliminate the ability of the passer to step up and he has to remain is the edge rusher's lanes.

Defensive and offensive lines must be strong from the inside out.
