Cool article. I have a feeling next season will feature a whole bunch of value rookies. With 8 picks in the top 5 rounds, in a draft deep enough to where a team like the Jags can find starting players in the first 4 or 5 rounds, This team might have 6 or 7 rookies playing large roles.

Quote:I'd put Poz above DeMeco Ryans (post injury)

DeMeco Ryans has played really good football in Philadelphia over the past two years, and cost a fraction of what Poz is making, give me Ryans at the value any day of the week.

I didn't realize they got him cheap. I thought they both had similar deals.

I was speaking more to performance only though, and I'd give the nod to Poz over Ryans of late.
I guess if you're a fan of the Econo-Jaguars this stuff is fuel for the fire.

Every time we pay somebody to play football, there's geeks massaging numbers against him.

You're right, he's not that cheap, he signed a monster contract in 2010 while he was with the Texans. He was one of the best Middle Linebackers in football at that time, impactful against the run and pass, a sideline to sideline stud, Poz isn't that kind of Mike Backer.
Quote:There is absolutely no way Poz is a top 5 linebacker in the league, how much football do you watch?

1. NaVorro Bowman

2. Patrick Willis

3. Luke Kuchley

4. Daryl Washington

5. Brian Cushing

6. Donald Butler

7. Sean Lee

8. Lawrence Timmons

9. Bobby Wagner

10. Derrick Johnson

11. Brandon Spikes

12. James Laurinitis

13. Mason Foster

14. DeMeco Ryans

Are some of the guys off the top of my head that play at a higher level than Poz, he's a middle of the road linebacker. If you think he's in the same stratosphere as Derrick Johnson you're truly delusional.
lol at u putting all those over Poz. Washington is on suspension away from a year ban, Cushing and Lee are always hurt, lol thinking all those guys are better than Poz
Poz was second overall for linebackers with combined tackles, so to suggest we grossly overpaid him is quite laughable.

He did the job we signed him to do, and he did it as well as you could ask even for what we paid him.  Was he overpaid?  All FAs are overpaid.  But there was nothing wrong with what we got in 2013 for what we're paying.

I don't like overpaying for average players like Tony Pashos and Clint Session.

However if the Jags go out and overpay for legit top level talent like Greg Hardy or Jairus Byrd, thats the kind of moves I am ok with overpaying for. Both are among the best at their positions.

I never understood the PFF rating on Poz. IMO, he has always played very well, really the only player on the Jags defense to play well in 2012. Marvin Lewis, who knows a thing or two about MLBs after coaching the Ravens defense, strongly criticized PFFs linebacker ratings.

I don't think Clint Session was really average. He was pretty good for the short time he actually played for us.

He was definitely overpaid for what we got in return though.
poz is the definition of a role player on any other team

Thanks a lot Gene

Sessions was really good until his concussions. The FA's that came in with Poz really helped our defense. Didn't we have a top 10 overall D? If we are talking about over paid FAs, look no further than Laurent Robison. Speaking of him, didn't he sue the Jags for something a little while ago?
Interesting read, like so many things don't agree with it all but.... hits most of it dead square.

LOL....he has lame gabber worth 500k.

This is gene's legacy for dave C to clean up.

Probably take 2~3 years.

Ugh...
These stats indicate that w/the exception of CS3 and Harris, Caldwell has done a phenonimal job of upgrading the roster. Especially at the CB position. On the flip side..."Out w/the Old and in w/the New"..

I Second this Notion...

Great year to have so many picks through five.

The easiest way to demonstrate this is to go to any site that ranks prospects by number.  I know cbssports does this, maybe nfl.com, too.

Then, simply carve out the first three rounds worth of prospects.  (This is not for accuracy, merely demonstration.)

What's immediately left in the next seventy picks or so is who we might expect to be available in the fourth and fifth.  Seeing the caliber players that are probably still going to be there quickly shows you how deep this draft is.  That doesn't even consider players who slide, and some will... because teams go for need and grades flatten as you go later and later into the draft.  This draft is really, really deep at OT, WR, DB, and QB (and some of those positions still offer good value that late.)
