Mike Mayock: “I’d Take Khalil Mack Over Jadeveon Clowney”

Published February 19, 2014 |

By Shane Richardson

In an interview with Adam Schein on Mad Dog Sports, reputed NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock said he would draft Khalil Mack out of the University of Buffalo over highly touted Jadeveon Clowney out of the University of South Carolina. Schein asked Mayock if he had concerns about the motor or character of Clowney:

Yeah, I do. I would start off by saying that physically, as an athletic specimen, he’s as good as there has ever been at that position. You look at Mario Williams, I think this kid has more upside than Mario did coming out. However…my concern is the work ethic, how much of your resources are you going to have to expend to make sure the kid is where he needs to be when he needs to be there and ultimately, do you trust him? Is he going to be an accountable teammate? And if I am sitting there with a choice between him and Khalil Mack, I’m probably going Khalil Mack…my Khalil Mack grade is just about the same as Clowney. So if I look at the two of them and say I trust one and I am not sure about the other…then yeah…Mack to me, I love that kid, and just because he played in Buffalo, I’m banging the tables for him.

Mayock was then asked to give the listeners some detail on why he was so high on Mack:

The first tape I put in was Ohio State, and this kid dominated Ohio State like nobody I’ve ever seen. He’s explosive off the edge, he’s 6’3″ 248 pounds, and in today’s NFL, explosion off the edge is a primary characteristic that you need, so that’s number one. Number two, he’s stout against the run. Number three, he hustles. Number four, he’s got a little aggressive chip on his shoulder…I’ve seen him read a quarterback’s eyes, drop back into coverage, and make a one handed interception.

Clowney is widely speculated to be the top pick in the draft so Mayock’s evaluation goes against the main stream thinking when it comes to the star defensive end. His coach at South Carolina certainly did not give him a ringing endorsement when asked about what he thought about Clowney. On ESPN’s “Scouts Inc.’s Top 32 for 2014,” Clowney is rated #1 with an overall grade of 96 while Mack is graded out at #5 with an overall graded of 94.

Mike Mayock knows something about Jadevon Clowney's work ethic issues.

Well, so does his former college coach, Steve Spurrier.

Take a look at this...

So ... Just ignore that part.

Steve Spurrier did not say  Jadeveon Clowney has a great work ethic. "Pretty good" means it needs to improve.

Mack is more experienced than Barr and a better fit than Clowney for the LEO and our culture.
I feel sorry for the teams that decide to pass on Clowney this year.
Is the Mack : Suggs comparison valid?

What's Clowney's hold-out probability?

The same as all top 10 rookies. Thank goodness for the rookie wage scale.

I don't think it is.  I think Mack is going to be a pretty good player, but I don't think he is as good as people have been saying.

I watched their bowl game and he didn't do much.  And I saw him loafing a little too.  Of course people don't bring that up.

I see more Dumervil in him personally. Obviously Mack has the height advantage though.

How do you know anyone decided to pass on him?

Dumervil was a defensive end who moved to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Is that the kind of player Mack is?
Sounds to me like he's an Allen Iverson type. Doesn't like practice, shows up gametime.

Jadeveon Clowney did not show up at game time. A guy who does that and is as gifted as he is does not have only three sacks in 13 games.

really wish mayock hadn't said this i was really hoping we could trade back with atlanta and get mack a second and a 4th

not saying mayock has any impact on what gm's think but if he is thinking this then that suggests some gms may be thinking this too

not from what I have seen suggs has a brute strength mack doesn't possess though i reckon mack is quicker. I like him alot however I would prefer him to be at linebacker like von miller in a 4-3 defense. I think he would do better at that position than being jacked up at the line of scrimmage by offensive tackles with close to 50 pounds plus on him

i think him poz and hayes can be a real force with russel allen and reynolds rotating in. Any of those 3 can rush the passer effectively and with the lightening package up front any of that front 7 could be coming for you

i like that idea
If we get Mack or Barr (I don't know enough about them to have a preference) I would not be mad. Geno Hayes makes me miss Daryl Smith. Russell Allen would not be a starter if we had a better OLB.

If we could trade down and get one of the two, i'd be okay with that. If Bridgewater is there at 3 then we take him.

If Bridgewater is gone and Clowney is there at #3, we will take Clowney. That is what it sounds like based on what Caldwell said. But I would rather trade down for a linebacker if Clowney can't prove he will give 100% effort on every play every day.
"...reputed NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock..."

LOL   In other words, he is believed to be an NFL draft analyst, but we can't be sure.
