Knowing the answer to this will influence which RB we target in the draft

It completely depends on the personnel in my opinion, not the other way around.

I think Gus would prefer a feature back, just my opinion

I suspect that the roadmap Caldwell and Bradley have includes a feature back, but I don't expect they'll claw their way to the podium at the top of round two to draft one this year. Running backs are too easy to find and too short-lived in the NFL to spend a premium pick on one unless the talent just demands it, and I don't see any backs in this draft class that fit that description.

If you have a committee it just means you don't have a guy that's good enough to be considered a featured back.

 

Every team is better off with more feature level players.

We can see both methods Sunday night. I personally prefer the committee method unless the team has only one good running back.

No it doesn't. A running back committee means you have more than one running back who is good enough to be a starter. Case in point: Fred Taylor and MJD.

 

One year the Broncos almost had two 1,000-yard rushers. The reason they didn't? One player got hurt and did not play in every game.

It's unusual to have two great backs, but you'll still have a featured starter and a backup.

Although he was Taylor's backup on the depth chart, MJD had more rushing yards in some games. They were pretty much 50/50 in carries every week. That was why we cut Taylor.

I choose committee.

 

That doesn't keep you from drafting one as high as the second round, though.  With devaluation of the position, there will probably be fewer and fewer backs taken as high as they have in the past.

 

Like WRs, it's nice to have role players.  You have your workhorse, your power guy, and your 3rd down type guy.  Have someone for every situation, instead of search for someone you hope can do it all.

 

Perhaps the approach is to form a committee and see if a feature emerges from it.  That way you're not putting all your eggs in one basket, all your hopes on one guy's shoulders.  We've seen what that gets you.  One injury and you're toast.

In 2007 Taylor had about 30% more carries than MJD and 56% more yards.

 

Taylor was the feature back from my recollection, but if you have some stats to show that MJD was getting more carries than him in one of the other seasons with Taylor healthy I wouldn't have a problem admitting you're right.

With our third round pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Tre Mason, featureback Auburn...?

I just said in some games, not overall throughout the years they were together, MJD had more carries for more yards.

 

MJD was a great up-the-middle runner and Taylor ran outside. It was a complementary approach. Buffalo's running backs are doing the same thing we did with ours.

 

Another reason I like committees: When Taylor was our only feature back, he was getting hurt all the time. While splitting with MJD he was able to play all 16 games. That cannot be a coincidence. The less time you are on the field, the less likely it is you will get hurt.

Those two helped us get to the playoffs. We won more games with them together than only MJD.

 

No matter how many feature running backs a team has, if the offensive line sucks, they will not go anywhere. The Broncos don't have elite running backs, but the OL has been helping them all season. So we need to pick a guard or center first even if Gus Bradley wants a better backup for MJD.

If I had to choose between Lynch or Moreno/Hillman/Ball, I'm inclined to lean toward Skittles

I don't think we have the talent to run the football successfully. It takes commitment to run the football as well.

 

You can't expect Fisch to change his spots, can you?
