Full Version: #17 - Arrelious Benn - Penalty

To me, the Arrelios Benn special teams penalty yesterday sums up the Gus Bradley era.

Jags punt the ball down to the Vikings 33 yard line.

2 Jag players are standing around the ball waiting for it to stop rolling

1 Vikings player stands approximately 5 yards away clearly avoiding any potential of making contact with the ball.

All of the sudden some Jag dude #17 (Arrelious Benn) comes out of nowhere and picks up the ball and starts running toward the endzone as if the Viking player touched the ball.

Jags get flagged because Benn had earlier run out of bounds and was the 1st player to make contact with the ball.

Jags re-punt and the Vikings return it to the 50

Essentially, the senseless action by Benn cost the Jags 17 yards which resulted in a Vikings field goal.

How [BLEEP] stupid does one have to be to not understand the rules when that is the only responsibility one has on this team.

If he thought the returner had touched the ball, which apparently he did, he would not have been the first person to touch the ball after going out of bounds. Therefore would no longer have been 'illegal touching'.

Just sayin'...
I disagree.  The delay of game on the kickoff sums up the Gus Bradley era.

Yeah it's not the lack of discipline type of penalty which can be effectively minimized with proper coaching and planning.  As much as face masks and the like move the ball up the field for the opponent significantly at 15 yards a pop, it's still a guy trying to make a play on defense or in this case special teams and it is truly an accident.  The jumping off sides, false starts, late hits and the like (discipline related) are the ones that tell you something is wrong with the coaching and the ones you should really be worried about.

You are implying personal fouls are not bad discipline penalties.
