Had him on here as a late-round sleeper a few weeks back, and would love to get him in the 5th. I rate him over Carr with a comparable arm and better pocket skills.

my thread is back from the dead.  fast forward a few months since I started this and I still feel the same about him.  Of all the potential 3rd day draft picks, I like this guy the most.  More and more videos of him have come out so I've been able to watch more and you definitely can see some red flags.  Doesnt do great in pressure and takes too much sacks.  But obviously anyone you find on day 3 is going to have issues.  And you can probably write some of that off to his lack of experience.  I still think from a physical standpoint, he is better than Teddy, Manziel, and Bortles.  Has the size and the big time arm.  Obviously the odds of him turning into a quality NFL starter are slim, but thats true of every QB taken 4th round and beyond.  But I'd rather take him than Murray or Fales or anyone else taken late.

Saying that I've seen Savage's name moving up mock drafts.  a couple months back you wouldnt see him on there.  Then you started seeing him 5th or 6th round.  And then Mel Kiper's latest mock has him in the 3rd.  Wouldnt surprise me to see a team become as interested as I am and reach a little.

He would be a great 5th rounder to let sit and learn, and if it pans out great. He looks to at least have Carr's arm, without the hype.
From what I've gathered (which isn't much), big time arm but needs an extremely good pocket.

Kiper has now mocked him to the 33rd overall pick!  first pick of the 2nd round.  Thats crazy.

correction thats McShay's mock.  Kiper still has him as a 3rd rounder.  Wonder if they are starting to hear some teams really like Savage.

This has to be kidding.

they must be hearing something from a few teams.

I'm not as surprised(although top of the 2nd does seem high).  When you draft a QB in the first round, you are expecting them to be the guy and to start almost immediately.  But after that, you are just drafting on potential, on a guy who can sit and learn and develop.  A guy like Aaron Murray will never be a top 15 starting QB because he just physically cant do it.  Same with David Fales.  Same with Tajh Boyd.

But Savage, he looks like an NFL QB.  He has the arm of an NFL QB.  At the end of the day his biggest weakness is inexperience.  But he has shown flashes of big time play.  If you are looking for a guy to develop who has the potential to be a starting QB, he is what you want.  You draft Fales and Murray to be clipboard holders and great team players.  You draft guys like Savage or Mettenberger because they at least physically have the chance to be a capable starting QB.  Odds are they wont be.  But at least their ceiling is at that level.

I reaaaaaally don't like Savage very much at all. But absolutely everything you just said made complete sense RFC. Like a lot more than I thought it would. Well said. You have my attention.
Well when O'Brien was rattling off names of QBs a few weeks back Savage was one he mentioned. And that was the first time I've heard Savage mentioned by a high level ranking person this whole offseason.
He looked nice in those highlight videos and we got to see him under center, but there was zero pressure.  Anyone have any videos of him under duress?

there are a few videos of him out there now.  Go to draftbreakdown.com.... they have his notre dame game.  his miami game.  etc...

he doesnt do great in pressure.  i dont think his oline was all that good either though.  sometimes he slides over well, steps up in the pocket and delivers a strike.  other times he he walks right into the pressure and takes an unnecessary sack.  he obviously has weaknesses or else he'd be projected much higher.  but is that weakness due to an inherent "Gabbert-ness" he'll never get rid of or can it be partly explained from not playing football for 3 years prior to last season.
Quote:He had one decent year in his entire college career where he threw 21 TDs and 9 picks, 61% completion rating, and only 7.6 ypa for just over 2900 yards. Not the kind of production you want to see in the final year of a potential NFL QB.

Sounds like he'd be a good flier, but not a 2nd round pick like some have been saying.
A [BLEEP] qb

he reminds me more of flacco than mettenberger does. if you can grab savage somewhere in the 5th round. i would definitely say to do it. the caveat is that hopefully the future starter has already been drafted.

He seems like a 2nd day (and perhaps even high 2nd round) lock by all accounts, however.

Cool Name Quotient says it's legit.
My boy Savage!  4th round is a perfect spot for him.  Won't have near the pressure.  And will be expected to sit for a year or two and learn.  At least that is what should happen.

Kind of surprised the Texans didnt draft a QB earlier.  Although it could have just been circumstance.  There were no QBs worthy of #1 overall.  And the top 3 all went before the 2nd round began.  So there may just not have been a QB of the right value at the right pick.  At least until this Savage pick.

He's the next Dan Marino.  We're screwed!
