HBO has itself another winner. Their new series, True Detective, is right up my alley. Take a creepy story, throw in some disturbed, complicated characters and have it all happen in the deep south. Good stuff.

Why it took so long to put Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson together is beyond me. Great performances from both of them so far, and it promises to only get better.

I've never heard of it but I'm a huge Woody Harrelson fan so I will be checking it out

I am loving this show so far. McConaughey is great in this.

I am sad to hear that next seasons boardwalk empire is the shows last season but I think this show will take its spot as my favorite HBO show with game of thrones
Plus being from Louisiana it all looks familiar

I will miss Boardwalk Empire, too, but Prohibition ended, what came after is a different story. I'm glad HBO isn't stretching it beyond what makes sense.

I like the format of True Detective. Each season it will tell a different story, with different characters. It will be hard to top the first season, though, if these first two episodes are any indication.

I've set it up to record. Haven't actually watched it yet. Looks like it'll be good. But for some reason all my shows have been piling up and I have no urge to watch tv lately.

Yeah that's the thing I like about American Horror Story, keeps the show from becoming too stale.
So what I'm recording now isn't even the first season?

Never mind.

Yes, it is. I was talking about the format in general and how it will play out in future seasons.

After re-reading I figured that out. I haven't watched it yet. But thanks for clarifying that for me.
This show reminds me of Twin Peaks. I can't help but wonder if Woody or Mathew are the killer. Well I guess Woody's character doesn't seem like it but maybe Matthew's.
Show is rad.

Can't wait until tomorrow- kinda wish I had discovered this show six months from now so I could watch them all real quick instead of waiting every week.

Pretty sure the filmmakers want the audience to think MM did it, but I'm guessing there's more to it than that. Seems a bit on the nose if he did indeed do it.

The only downside for me is that I don't see how they could spin more seasons out of the show, based on the current format.

We shall see. It's definitely worth watching.
Love this show, especially after last weeks episode.  About 15 minutes or 20 minutes in, it turned into one of the best shows I have ever seen.

From what I've read, each season will feature a completely new story, with new characters and different actors.

Very interesting. That's good on one hand, but also a bit of a disappointment as I am really enjoying this Rust character.

Rustin Cohle is already one of my favorite characters of all time.

Quote:I'd consider myself a realist, alright? But in philosophical terms I'm what's called a pessimist... I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself - we are creatures that should not exist by natural law... We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

And, before you ask, I did not quote that from memory, but I did look it up immediately after watching that episode because I liked it so much.

Fantastic monologue. I can picture Woody Harrelson's face, staring back at Rust as he drives.

My other favorite is when he asks the two investigators if they had kids and then started in about "The hubris it must take to rip a soul out of non-existence".

Sounds like quite the misanthrope.

I watched part of one of these episodes on another TV; I don't have HBO at home.  It looked really interesting but I didn't want to get into it too far because it was in the middle.  I'll wait for Netflix to stream it.  Hopefully they do.
I'm not sure Netflix will ever stream it, HBO likes to hold on to it's product. My sister shared her DirecTV password with me so I can stream it on HBO Go.
