Johnny Cash's covers on "Hurt" and "I Hung My Head" are exceptional. I'll admit to that. I like NiN and I like Sting, but in some way, Johnny took those songs and made them his own. I prefer his versions better. And in fairness, this isn't a knock against Trent Reznor, but, the low, whispering tone and style he used in "Hurt" didn't do the lyrics justice. I think Johnny was able to portray that beautifully. I think I was maybe 10 or 12 when I first heard his version, and it hit me pretty good. I DO NOT, however, like his cover of Hank Williams' "Im So Lonesome I Could Cry". Doesn't work for me.

This cover kind of works for me too. But it's weird. My mom played it a lot when I was a kid, it was by Rod Stewart "I don't Want To Talk About It". It's originally by Crazy Horse. I personally like both versions. And I respect the fact that Stewart didn't really derive much from the original style and tone of Crazy Horse's version. He just sped it up a bit.

Interesting. Thats one of those songs that I know by the cover more than the original, so the cover by familiarity sounds more "right" to me, but the original is still good too. Bluesy. 

I saw your video of Duran Duran's cover of "Thank You". You should check out Chris Cornell's version. Honestly, this guy can probably sing anything and kill it.

I noticed that myself...it was a nice touch by FF. 

 

The 1980's into the 1990's were the golden age of pop music, IMO. Some of the best combo of creative melodies, soul, arrangements & rhythms ever made. Mainstream pop music does not have the diversity anymore. Its all cookie cutter, blueprint crap. Too many people like a single style now.

It's all about perspective and experience. I personally think the 60s through early 70s were the Golden Age of pop music. I zoned out of music during the era you describe due to sheer boredom.

Another good one. Orgy was a pretty good band back in the late 90's/early 2000s. Their first two albums were very enjoyable. After that, they dropped off the face of the earth.

 

Funny, I recently read about them starting up a crowdfunding campaign for a new album and tour, and they set the bar so high, everyone was making fun of how little money people donated. Like, it was pretty bad.

I'll give the 60's/ 70's era the nod over the ERA I mentioned for better lyrics. IMO, there was much more diverse musical styles that were popular mainstream in the 80-'s and 90's by comparison.

I am a fan of music from most generations but IMO the 90's had the weakest decade of any. Not saying everything that was released was bad or that there wasn't some good stuff but up until the 90's music seemed to be "happy" and something that was enjoyable. IMO Kurt Cobain ushered in a decade of music that brought the underground depression and "sad" music to mainstream.

Cornell did a good job, especially for just him playing it. I've enjoyed his work in most of his collaborations Soundgarden/ TOTD/ and Audioslave. 

 

I like Duran's version of Thank You better because (for no fault of Cornell's) I like the harmonies in the bridge that are missing from Cornell's version. Thats a key component of that song, thats also obviously evident in the orig Led Zep version too. Both Cornell and Simon LeBon nail the signature note of that song exceptionally well, though - I expected it from Cornell; it was actually a pleasant surprise to hear LeBon get it.
