Michigan fired OC Al Borges earlier today and 4 hours later hired Alabama OC Doug Nussmeier.

I can't think of a better hire. Wow.

He was pretty disappointing this past season. Not really sad to see him go, to be perfectly honest.

Can't be any worse than this guy:

Alabama scored 38.2 points per game (18th in the country).

Last year, Alabama scored 37.6 points per game (13th in the country).

Those are Alabama's two highest scoring seasons of the past decade. How has he been a disappointment?

His situational playcalling has been pretty predictable and bad this season. I'd say he was the reason 'Bama lost the Iron Bowl with how he handled the next-to-last drive on both 3rd and 4th down.

A couple series don't define a season. Alabama has scored 37+ppg in the two seasons under Nussmeier. Alabama was 5th in the country in yards per play the past two seasons. Alabama's offense is not the reason they lost to Oklahoma and Auburn. You can't expect to win when the other team is scoring 45 points.

A blogger at SB Nation summed it up pretty good:

"Many of the same people that were screaming about Nussmeier being too aggressive during the latter stages of last year’s Texas A&M game and the early stages of last year’s SEC Championship Game, were chastising him for being too conservative against Auburn. The phrase ‘RUN THE DANG BALL’ has a special place in the hearts of most Alabama fans, unless they do run the ball and it doesn’t work, in which case that phrase is quickly replaced by ‘I TOLD YOU THEY SHOULD’VE THROWN IT MORE’. My point is that, with fans, offensive coordinators usually can’t win. If the play worked it tends to be about how well the players executed. If the play failed it tends to be about how that wasn’t the right play call for that situation."

First off, the stats mean nothing for what I'm criticizing Nussmeier on. When the time came for him to make adjustments and/or break from his tendencies, he didn't. The end of the drive that I mentioned is a perfect example of this. Auburn was selling out to stop the run and instead of going play-action, he ran the ball again into the heart of the defense on 4th down and got stuffed just like on the previous play.

Hell, I wasn't going to talk about the Sugar Bowl, but that's another instance of him not making adjustments. Cyrus Kouandjio had been getting beat almost the entire game while pass-blocking because the DE on his side was much to fast for him and Nussmeier never have him any sort of help in the form of a chip from a TE or a RB. I'm not saying he had to do it every single play because it'd be dumb, but on crucial plays where AJ got hurried/hit/sacked, you have to make that adjustment.

I'm not calling Nuss a terrible OC, but it's pretty stupid to try and handwave away his flaws when they're right there for everyone to see. Though, I do find it amusing that the Washington SBNation blog would stick up for him just because he used to coach there.

Your opinion, because you are an Alabama fan, is more important than a Washington fan's opinion?

The spin the SEC fans are putting on the Nussmeier situation is ridiculous. He took Alabama's offense to new levels. Enjoy Lane Kiffin (lol).

Michigan fan here. Happy but not impressed. i wouldn't say we have the same caliber of athletes as Alabama either. that could be the difference.

1. Not impressed? Who better should Michigan have gotten after firing Borges?

2. I wouldn't say that the Big Ten has SEC level athletes or SEC level defenses either, so the fact that Michigan doesn't have Alabama-level athletes is pretty moot.

3. In 2011 and 2012, Michigan had the #1 ranked offensive line recruiting class. In 2013, Michigan signed the #4 overall pro-style quarterback and the #1 overall running back. The talent is there, it just needs to be utilized.

4. Nussmeier is the #14 rated recruiter in the nation, with down south ties. Think about that for a minute.

i didn't say disappointed. i said i wasn't impressed. I'm happy about the hire. however, Hoke needs to get things going in short order for his own good. I like Hoke, I'm well aware of our recruiting, i just hope Nuss is the right guy. especially since the neighbor underneath me is an ohio state fan.
I don't know too much about Nuss, but I do know that Borges had to go.  There was far too much talent on this team to produce some of the pitiful results this year.  Looking at stats and rankings it appears Bama has had a pretty effective offense under Nuss, and they definitely appeared to move the ball well.  My only concern is how much of that is the Alabama/Saban effect where you are stocked with the best players in the country and how much is due to the OC.

On the other side of the ball, I started out impressed with Mattison but this season I saw some hot and cold performances by the D.  Secondary looked downright awful at times.

Considering that I'm talking about the job he did while at Alabama, I would certainly think so.

Yeah, he put up numbers, but his lack of adjustments and situational play-calling this season(and in the first half of the 2012 SEC Championship) cost the team. Hope he does well for you guys and all, but acting like he was infallible because of the box scores is stupid.
Thats a win.

Ok, so what hire WOULD have impressed you?

you do realize you do this with anyone who doesn't share your opinion, right? i had/have no one in particular who i was interested in seeing hired. i didn't do cartwheels when this guy was chosen. i didn't hate it either. i didn't hate it when they tabbed rich. maybe nuss will assist us in our journey back to the top of the B1G. maybe he won't. impressed? no. impress me next season.
In other words, you have no idea.

If you are going to talk down coaching hires, at least have reason why Nuss is a bad fit or at LEAST have someone you wanted more.

that's right i have no idea if he will work out. actually, i guess the both of us have no idea. I'm waiting to be impressed and you already are. i did say i was happy, but this was not good enough for you. in fact, you decided to lie and say i talked him down. where did i say that? i didn't, i only said i was happy but not impressed. the weird thing is you wont accept it and let it go. send him a friend request or follow him twitter...

also, you don't make rules for me on here. never said he was a bad fit, don't have to give you a recommendation for who would be better.

Someone ranks recruiters? Good God.
Lol. I didn't know that until just recently.
